Spencer Gollan
Spencer Herbert Gollan (22 January 1860 – 27 January 1934) was a sportsman who excelled in rowing and golf, and who was also a race horse owner. Gollan was born at Napier in the Colony of New Zealand, the son of Donald Gollan, an engineer and surveyor, and Frederica, the widow of Count Charles de Pelichet. He received his education in New Zealand, Switzerland, and at the University of Oxford. He became a racehorse owner in Australia and New Zealand. He was also a golfer who twice won the New Zealand Amateur championship, and was a well-known figure at St. Andrews. In the spring of 1901, with two professional oarsmen, Tom Sullivan and George Towns, he broke the record for rowing between Oxford and Putney along the River Thames. The distance of a little over 104 miles was covered in 13 hours 57 minutes. The previous record was set in 1889 at (22hrs and 28 minutes). William McCulloch Gollan (15 June 1885 – 4 October 1968) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1941 until 1962. He was a member of the Labor Party. He held numerous ministerial positions between 1953 and 1959. Early life Gollan was born in Woodburn, New South Wales and was the son of a farmer, John Gollan. He was educated at Lismore Public School and initially worked as a bush worker in rural New South Wales. After several years abroad in South Africa, he later lived in Sydney and owned various businesses including a chain of butcher shops and hotels. Donald Herbert Louis Gollan (19 January 1896 – 13 August 1971) was a British rower who competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics, winning silver. He was partially deaf and communicated using British Sign Language. Sport career Gollan was born in Paddington, London, the son of Spencer Gollan, a racehorse owner and keen sportsman from New Zealand. He started his sport career as a competitive swimmer, encouraged by his father. He was a member of both Thames Rowing Club and Vesta Rowing Club. He was initially a single sculler and first entered the Wingfield Sculls in 1914. He was probably excused from war service owing to his disability. Sir Henry Cowper Gollan CBE KC (8 January 1868 – 5 August 1949) was a British lawyer and judge. He served as attorney general and chief justice of a number of British colonies in the early 20th century. His last position before retirement was as Chief Justice of Hong Kong. Early life Gollan was born on 8 January 1868 in Coquimbo, Chile. He was the son of Sir Alexander Gollan, K.C.M.G., a British diplomat. He was educated at Charterhouse School. He served as Health Minister of Argentina for a brief period during the presidency of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in 2015, and as Health Minister of Buenos Aires Province from 2019 to 2021. John Gollan (2 April 1911 – 5 September 1977) was a British political leader who was general secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) from 1956 to 1975. Gollan was born in Edinburgh, where he grew up and took his first job as a painter's apprentice. His first introduction to political activity was during the 1926 general strike when he helped distribute the papers of the strike committee. On International Workers' Day, 1 May, the following year he joined the and its youth wing the Young Communist League (YCL). He became a signwriter but his career was cut short in July 1931 when he was arrested for distributing anti-militarist leaflets. He had been organising soldiers to demand better rights and conditions, an activity for which he was sentenced to 6 months in HM Prison Edinburgh. Sir Alexander Gollan (1840 – 5 May 1902) was a British diplomat who served 40 years in the consular service, ending as British Consul-General for Cuba 1892–1898. Career Gollam was appointed British Vice-Consul at Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1856. He was in charge of the consulate at Rio Grande do Sul 1862–1865, then moved to Chile where he served at Coquimbo and Valparaíso. In 1876 he was appointed Consul for Nicaragua. After further service in Brazil, he was in 1885 transferred to the Philippines, where he stayed for seven years. From 1892 until November 1898 he was Consul-General in the Island of Cuba. He was the head of Televisión Litoral S.A., the largest media conglomerate in Argentina outside Buenos Aires, which includes the local TV channel Canal 3, and the radio stations LT2 (Radio Dos), FM Vida, and Radio Cataratas.
