''Goethals'' was an ocean-going hopper dredge operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers named for George Washington Goethals, who supervised much of the building of the Panama Canal. The dredge's keel was laid at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation's Fore River Plant, Quincy, Massachusetts, on 5 October 1936 with launch in August 1937 and delivery in December. The dredge was operated under the direction of the Philadelphia District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers until its retirement in 1982. The Goethals Medal is a national award given annually by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) to a registered engineer who is also a member of SAME prior to nomination. Goethals Bridge
The Goethals Bridge () is the name of a pair of cable-stayed bridge spans connecting Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Staten Island, New York, in the United States. The spans cross a strait known as Arthur Kill, and replaced a cantilever bridge span built in 1928. The bridge is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The original cantilever span was one of the first structures built by the Port Authority. The New Jersey side is about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Newark Liberty International Airport. The bridge was grandfathered into Interstate 278, and named for Major General George Washington Goethals, who supervised construction of the Panama Canal and was the first consulting engineer of the Port Authority. Robert Goethals (16 June 1922 – 7 July 2011) was a Belgian football player and coach. Playing career Goethals was born in Brasschaat. A midfielder, he played at AA Gent during and after the Second World War. He played 19 games with the team in the First Division. 1948, Goethals signed a contract in Third Division SV Waregem and he finished his career at SK Roeselare in Fourth Division. Managerial career Goethals studied Physical Education and started a career as coach after his playing career. In 1978–79, he graduated to First Division. Jan Coucke (c. 1812 – 16 November 1860) and Pieter Goethals (c. 1826 – 16 November 1860) were two Flemings who were sentenced to death for murder in 1860 at a time Belgium was legally only French-speaking, though the majority of the citizens spoke Dutch, and only the official language was acknowledged by the Courts of Justice.
