The Normans ( Norman: ''Normaunds''; french: Normands; la, Nortmanni/Normanni) were a population arising in the medieval Duchy of Normandy from the intermingling between Norse Viking settlers and indigenous West Franks and Gallo-Romans. The term is also used to denote emigrants from the duchy who conquered other territories such as England and Sicily. The Norse settlements in West Francia followed a series of raids on the French northern coast mainly from Denmark, although some also sailed from Norway and Sweden. Sarah Updike Goddard
Sarah Updike Goddard (January 5, 1770) was an early American printer, as well as a co-founder and publisher of the ''Providence Gazette and Country Journal'', the first newspaper founded in Providence, Rhode Island. She worked closely with her son William and daughter Mary Katherine, who both also became printers and publishers, forming one of the earliest influential publishing dynasties in the American colonies. Early years and education Sarah Updike was born at Cocumscussuc, Rhode Island, just north of the village of Wickford, where her parents, Lodowick Updike (anglicized from Opdyck) and Abigail (Newton) Updike, had inherited Smith's Castle, the original site of Roger Williams' trading post. Rayner Goddard, Baron Goddard
William Edgar Rayner Goddard, Baron Goddard, (10 April 1877 – 29 May 1971) was Lord Chief Justice of England from 1946 to 1958, known for his strict sentencing and mostly conservative views despite being the first Lord Chief Justice to be appointed by a Labour government, as well as the first to possess a law degree. Goddard's no-nonsense reputation was reflected in a number of nicknames that he acquired, which included: 'The Tiger', 'Justice-in-a-jiffy', and—from Winston Churchill—'Lord God-damn'. Ambrose Goddard (born 1819)
Ambrose Lethbridge Goddard (9 December 1819 – 15 November 1898) was a British Conservative Party politician. Political career Goddard was first elected MP for Cricklade in 1847 and held the seat until 1868. In 1874 he regained the seat before stepping down at the next election in 1880. Ambrose Goddard
Ambrose Goddard (c. 1727–1815) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1772 to 1806. Goddard was the third son of Ambrose Goddard and his wife Elizabeth Awdry, daughter of Ambrose Awdry of Seend, Wiltshire. He was educated at Winchester College from 1743 to 1745. He settled in Lisbon where he was in merchant activities and was agent for the Post Office there until 1772. On death of his elder brother in 1770, he succeeded to the family inheritance and returned to Wiltshire. He married Sarah Williams, daughter of Rev. Thomas Williams of Pilrowth, Carmarthenshire on 16 August 1776. Goddard was returned as Member of Parliament for Wiltshire at a by-election on 21 August 1772 after a hard-fought and expensive contest. He was returned unopposed in 1774 and 1780. George William Goddard
George William Goddard (June 15, 1889 – September 20, 1987) was a United States Air Force brigadier general and a pioneer in aerial photography. Early life and education George William Goddard was born in London, England, in 1889. He moved to Rochester, New York, in June 1904 to live with his aunt and uncle. He was naturalized on April 27, 1918. Goddard graduated from Washing Irving Preparatory School in New York in 1910 and attended Keuka Institute, now Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York, for two years. While at Keuka College, he witnessed early flights by Glenn Curtiss. Goddard then studied commercial art in Rochester for a year. He was a free-lance cartoonist in Rochester until January 1916, when he became a staff artist for ''Coke and Iron Monthly'' in Chicago, Illinois. Joe Goddard (born 12 September 1979) is a British musician, songwriter, and DJ. He is best known as a member of the English synth-pop band Hot Chip, which he co-founded with Alexis Taylor. In 2007, he co-founded record label Greco-Roman, which has produced albums by artists such as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Disclosure. Goddard is also a member of electronica group The 2 Bears, and produced two solo albums, ''Harvest Festival'' (2009) and ''Electric Lines'' (2017). Geoffrey Goddard (19 November 1937 – 15 May 2000) was an English songwriter, singer and instrumentalist. Working for Joe Meek in the early 1960s, he wrote songs for Heinz, Mike Berry, Gerry Temple, The Tornados, Kenny Hollywood, The Outlaws, Freddie Starr, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Ramblers and John Leyton. His song for Leyton, "Johnny Remember Me", reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart. By the mid-1960s he had fallen out with Meek.
