Gobo Ashley
William Hare "Gobo" Ashley (10 February 1862 – 14 July 1930) was a South African cricketer who played in one Test in 1889, the second Test ever played by his country. A left-arm medium-paced bowler, Ashley took 7 for 95 in the only Test innings he bowled in, becoming the second South African to take a five-wicket haul after Albert Rose-Innes during that inaugural South African Test earlier in the year. Ashley later played three first-class matches for a Cape Town Clubs team and Western Province in South African domestic cricket in 1890 and 1891, taking 13 wickets. He was a member of Western Province team that won the 1890–91 Champion Bat Tournament, when he opened the bowling with Voltelin van der Bijl. Mowbray, Cape Town
Mowbray is one of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa and lies on the slopes of Devil's Peak. Mowbray is at a junction of several major Cape Town highways and has an important multi-modal public transport interchange at Mowbray railway station. Its original name was Driekoppen ("Three heads" in Dutch). Voltelin Van Der Bijl
Voltelin Albert William van der Bijl (31 January 1872 – 2 October 1941) was a South African cricketer who played for Western Province in the 1890s. Voltelin van der Bijl was an all-rounder who batted in the middle order and opened the bowling. He took 6 for 56 and 3 for 36 in Western Province's victory over Griqualand West in 1890–91. In the 1892–93 season he made his highest first-class score of 61 and took three wickets when Western Province beat Transvaal in Western Province's first appearance in the Currie Cup. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. One Test Wonder
In cricket, a one-Test wonder is usually a cricketer who is only selected for one Test match during his career and never represents his country again. This is not necessarily due to a poor performance and can be for numerous reasons, such as injury or strong competition from other players. The term is also used in rugby. More rarely, the term may refer to a player who has played in more than one Test, but was very successful only once. Examples include the bowlers Narendra Hirwani of India and Bob Massie of Australia, both of whom took eight wickets in each innings of their debut matches, but then failed to live up to their early promise. Champion Bat Tournament
The Champion Bat Tournament was a cricket tournament played in the late 1800s in present-day South Africa. Rather than a cup, the winner of the tournament was presented with the "Champion Bat" – a cricket bat emblazoned with a silver crest. Contested approximately every three to four years, it was first held in 1876 in Port Elizabeth, between teams representing the major settlements of the Cape Colony. Although the exact composition varied, the town-based format continued until the tournament's final edition during the 1890–91 season, which was played between Eastern Province, Griqualand West, and Western Province (teams which still compete in South African domestic cricket). The tournament was played five times before being superseded by the Currie Cup as the premier South African cricket tournament.
