Gobionotothen
''Gobionotothen'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. They are native to the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy ''Gobionotothen'' was first formally described in 1976 by the Russian ichthyologist Arkady Vladimirovich Balushkin with the type species designated as ''Notothenia gibberifrons'' which was described by the Swedish naturalist Einar Lönnberg in 1905 with its type locality given as South Georgia. Some authorities place this taxon in the subfamily Nototheniinae, but the 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World'' does not include subfamilies in the Nototheniidae. The name of the genus is a compound of ''gobio'' meaning “goby”, referring to the goby-like form of these species and ''notothen'', indicating that it is a nothothen. Species Five recognized species are in this genus: * '' Gobionotothen acuta'' ( Günther, 1880) (triangular rockcod) * '' Gobionotothen angustifrons'' ( J. G. Fischer, 1885) (narro ... Gobionotothen Gibberifrons
''Gobionotothen gibberifrons'', the humped rockcod or the humphead notothen, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. It is native to the islands of the Scotia Arc (the South Shetland, South Orkney, South Sandwich and South Georgia islands), the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula, and Heard Island in the Southern Ocean. This species inhabits depths of 6-429 m (20-1,407 ft), but is most abundant at depths of 100-400 m (328-1,312 ft), at least around Elephant Island. Taxonomy and etymology ''Gobionotothen gibberifrons'' was first formally described in 1905 as ''Notothenia gibberifrons'' by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg with the type locality given as the seven locations around South Georgia in the Southern Ocean. The specific name ''gibberifrons'' is a compound of ''gibber'' which means "humpbacked" and ''frons'' meaning "forehead", an allusion to the convex forehead. Description This species ... Gobionotothen Acuta
''Gobionotothen acuta'', the triangular rockcod or the triangular notothen, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. It is native to the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, the Heard Islands and the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy and etymology ''Gobionotothen acuta'' was first formally described in 1880 as ''Notothenia acuta'' by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther with the type locality given as Kerguelen Island. The specific name ''acuta'' means "sharp" or "pointed", an allusion to its snout. The common names of this species, 'triangular rockcod' and 'triangular notothen', refer to the triangular shape of the first dorsal fin, which is due to the first spine being distinctly longer than the others and the remaining spines decreasing regularly in length to the last. This acute triangular shape of the first dorsal fin is rare in species of nototheniids. Description Th ... Nototheniidae
: ''In some scientific literature, the term "cod icefish" is used to identify members of this family. This should not be confused with the term "icefish," which refers to the "white-blooded" fishes of the family Channichthyidae. See Icefish (other).'' Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes, is a family of ray-finned fishes, part of the suborder Notothenioidei which is traditionally placed within the order Perciformes. They are largely found in the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy Nototheniidae was described as a family in 1861 by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther with the type genus being ''Notothenia'' which had been described in 1844 by Sir John Richardson with the species ''Notothenia coriiceps'' which Richardson had also described in 1844 subsequently being designated as the type in 1862 by Theodore Nicholas Gill. The name ''Notothenia'' means “coming from the south”, a reference to the Antarctic distribution of the genus. They are traditio ... Family (biology)
Family ( la, familia, plural ') is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". What belongs to a family—or if a described family should be recognized at all—are proposed and determined by practicing taxonomists. There are no hard rules for describing or recognizing a family, but in plants, they can be characterized on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive features of plant species. Taxonomists often take different positions about descriptions, and there may be no broad consensus across the scientific community for some time. The publishing of new data and opini ... South Shetland
The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands with a total area of . They lie about north of the Antarctic Peninsula, and between southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands. By the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the islands' sovereignty is neither recognized nor disputed by the signatories and they are free for use by any signatory for non-military purposes. The islands have been claimed by the United Kingdom since 1908 and as part of the British Antarctic Territory since 1962. They are also claimed by the governments of Chile (since 1940, as part of the Antártica Chilena province) and Argentina (since 1943, as part of Argentine Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego Province). Several countries maintain research stations on the islands. Most of them are situated on King George Island, benefitting from the airfield of the Chilean base Eduardo Frei. There are sixteen research stations in different parts of the islands, with Chilean stations being t ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Commercial Fisheries
Commercial fishing is the activity of catching fish and other seafood for commercial profit, mostly from wild fisheries. It provides a large quantity of food to many countries around the world, but those who practice it as an industry must often pursue fish far into the ocean under adverse conditions. Large-scale commercial fishing is also known as industrial fishing. The major fishing industries are not only owned by major corporations but by small families as well. In order to adapt to declining fish populations and increased demand, many commercial fishing operations have reduced the sustainability of their harvest by fishing further down the food chain. This raises concern for fishery managers and researchers, who highlight how further they say that for those reasons, the sustainability of the marine ecosystems could be in danger of collapsing. Commercial fishermen harvest a wide variety of animals. However, a very small number of species support the majority of the world' ... Total Length
Fish measurement is the measuring of individual fish and various parts of their anatomies. These data are used in many areas of ichthyology, including taxonomy and fisheries biology. Overall length * Standard length (SL) is the length of a fish measured from the tip of the snout to the posterior end of the last vertebra or to the posterior end of the midlateral portion of the hypural plate. Simply put, this measurement excludes the length of the caudal (tail) fin. * Total length (TL) is the length of a fish measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of the caudal fin, usually measured with the lobes compressed along the midline. It is a straight-line measure, not measured over the curve of the body. Standard length measurements are used with Teleostei (most bony fish), while total length measurements are used with Myxini (hagfish), Petromyzontiformes (lampreys), and (usually) Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays), as well as some other fishes. Total length me ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
