Glossiphoniidae
Glossiphoniidae are a family of freshwater proboscis-bearing leeches. These leeches are generally flattened, and have a poorly defined anterior sucker. Most suck the blood of freshwater vertebrates like amphibians, crocodilians and aquatic turtles, but some feed on invertebrates like oligochaetes and freshwater snails instead. Although they prefer other hosts, blood-feeding species will opportunistically feed from humans. There is considerable interest in the symbiotic bacteria that at least some glossiphoniids house in specialized organs called bacteriomes. The bacteria are thought to provide the leeches with nutrients that are scarce or absent from their regular diets. '' Haementeria'' as well as '' Placobdelloides'' have Enterobacteriaceae symbionts, while '' Placobdella'' harbours peculiar and independently derived alphaproteobacteria. Systematics and taxonomy The relationships between members of Glossiphoniidae are not completely understood. Some sources divide the ... Placobdelloides Siamensis
''Placobdelloides siamensis '' is a species of blood-feeding jawless leech in the family Glossiphoniidae.Oka, A. 1917. Zoological Results of a Tour in the Far East, pt. III. Hirudinea. Memoirs of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, VI, pp. 157-176, pl. VII.Sawyer, R.T. 1986: Leech biology and behaviour. Volume II. Feeding biology, ecology, and systematics. Clarendon Press, Oxford. It is commonly known as the Siam shield leech and is a prevalent ectoparasite on Malayemys turtles but has a range of Geoemydidae hosts. In high numbers it can cause severe anaemia and malnutrition which can lead to the death of its host. Taxonomy The species was first described as ''Hemiclepsis siamensis'' by Oka in 1917 then transferred by Sawyer to his new genus '' Placobdelloides'' in 1986. In 2018, it was redescribed from specimens collected in Thailand. Hosts The type host is the Black Marsh Turtle, '' Siebenrockiella crassicollis''. Other hosts include the Southeast Asian Box Turtle, ''Cuora amboi ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

''Placobdelloides '' is a genus of glossophoniid leeches. Description Species of ''Placobdelloides'' lack a jaw and usually feed with a protrusible proboscis; they are predacious or sanguivorous, or both, on a variety of prey such as shrimps, waterfowl, fish, amphibians, turtles, crocodiles or mammals. Species The genus includes 17 species found worldwide: * '' Placobdelloides bancrofti'' (Best, 1931) * '' Placobdelloides bdellae'' (Ingram, 1957) * '' Placobdelloides emydae'' (Harding, 1924) * '' Placobdelloides fimbriata'' (Johansson, 1909) * '' Placobdelloides fulva'' (Harding, 1921) * '' Placobdelloides horai'' (Baugh, 1960) * '' Placobdelloides indica'' (Baugh, 1960) * '' Placobdelloides jaegerskioeldi'' (Johansson, 1909) * '' Placobdelloides maorica'' (Benham, 1907) * '' Placobdelloides multistriata'' (Johansson, 1909) * '' Placobdelloides octostriata'' (Grube, 1866) * '' Placobdelloides okadai'' (Oka, 1925) * '' Placobdelloides okai'' (Soós, 1969) * ''Placobdelloides s ... Bacteria
Bacteria (; singular: bacterium) are ubiquitous, mostly free-living organisms often consisting of one biological cell. They constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria were among the first life forms to appear on Earth, and are present in most of its habitats. Bacteria inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, and the deep biosphere of Earth's crust. Bacteria are vital in many stages of the nutrient cycle by recycling nutrients such as the fixation of nitrogen from the atmosphere. The nutrient cycle includes the decomposition of dead bodies; bacteria are responsible for the putrefaction stage in this process. In the biological communities surrounding hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, extremophile bacteria provide the nutrients needed to sustain life by converting dissolved compounds, such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, to energy. Bacteria also live in symbiotic and parasitic relationsh ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
