Gloria Salii
Gloria Salii (born 1950 or 1951) is the bilung of Koror which is the female counterpart of ibedul and highest ranking female chief title in Palau. Life She became the bilung in 1975. After the death of her older brother High Chief ( ibedul) of Koror Yutaka Gibbons, there was a succession dispute between Salii, on behalf of her son James Lebuu Littler, and her brother Alexander Merep. Personal life Her family are of English, Chinese and royal Palauan descent. She is married to Michael Littler, an administrator in the Palauan educational system and their son was born in 1978. She is the brother of the former ibedul of Koror Yutaka Gibbons, Governor of Koror John C. A factor that resulted in the decline of chiefly authority in Palau was the introduction of elected governors, called upon in the Constitution of Palau which came into effect on 1 January 1981. Koror
Koror is the state comprising the main commercial centre of the Republic of Palau. It consists of several islands, the most prominent being Koror Island (also ''Oreor Island''). It is Palau’s most populous state. History In the oral tradition of Palau, Koror is one of the children of Milad, and thus occupies an important position in traditional belief. In addition, Koror is the home of the clan of the Ibedul, the high chief of Palau. Several traditional villages in Koror span the volcanic and rock island portions. Yutaka Gibbons
Yutaka Miller Gibbons (17 January 1944 – 4 November 2021) was the ibedul of Koror from 1973 until his death in 2021. He was also an anti–nuclear weapons activist and political candidate. Early and personal life Gibbons was born in Palau in 1944. He was of English, Chinese and royal Palauan descent. His younger sister Gloria Salii holds the title of bilung which the female counterpart of ibedul and makes her the highest ranking female chief in Palau. His brother John C. Gibbons was governor of Koror and his other brother Alexander Merep succeeded him as ibedul. Ibedul Succession Dispute
There was a Order of succession, succession dispute following the death of Yutaka Gibbons, the ibedul of the state of Koror, Palau, on November 4, 2021. Gibbons' younger siblings, rechucher-ra-techekii Alexander Merep and bilung Gloria Salii, both initially claimed the title, but Salii would later relent her claim in favour of her son, James Lebuu Littler. Merep was accepted as ibedul by the traditional chiefs of Koror and the Council of Chiefs, although Salii maintains that her son is the ibedul. Alexander Merep
Alexander Merep is the High Chief ( ibedul) of Koror in the Republic of Palau. Life Merep served as the director of the Koror State Public Land Authority. He held the title rechucher-ra-techekii before being appointed by female Idid members led by Ochob Katey Ngiraked as the new Ibedul. The appointment was accepted by the ngarameketii (traditional chiefs of Koror) on February 22, 2022, and supported by the Koror hamlet chiefs.
