Glomeris Intermedia
''Glomeris intermedia'', also known as the western six-striped pill millipede, is a species of pill millipede within the genus ''Glomeris'' and family Glomeridae. Description ''Glomeris intermedia'' exhibits a range of colours, with individuals displaying a base colour of black, brown, grey or yellow on their body. Additionally, the tergites, which are the hardened dorsal plates covering the segments of the millipede's body, bear several spots that vary in coloration from beige to red in colour. Among the spots present, the middle spot is generally the largest, although it can be smaller or even absent in some individuals. The lateral-most spot extends further forward compared to the middle spot and both spots are sharply demarcated at their anterior boundaries. Notably, the posterior edges of the segments are outlined by a narrow, lightly coloured line, creating a distinct visual pattern. ''Glomeris marginata'' is a common European species of pill millipede. It is a short millipede, rounded in cross-section, which is capable of rolling itself up into a ball ("volvation") when disturbed. This behaviour is also found in the pill woodlouse ''Armadillidium'', with which ''G. marginata'' is often confused. Distribution ''Glomeris marginata'' is found throughout central and north-western Europe, from Poland and Scandinavia to Spain and Italy. In the British Isles, it is found in all areas south of the Central Belt of Scotland. Description ''Glomeris marginata'' grows up to long and wide, and is covered by twelve black dorsal plates with white rims. Glomerida
Glomerida is an order of pill-millipedes found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere. They superficially resemble pill-bugs or woodlice, and can enroll into a protective ball. They have twelve body segments, 17 to 19 pairs of legs, and males have enlarged rear legs involved in mating. The order includes about 30 genera and at least 280 species, including ''Glomeris marginata'', the common European pill-millipede. The order contains members in Europe, South-east Asia and the Americas from California to Guatemala. Although historically considered closely related with the similar sphaerotheriidans that also enroll, some DNA evidence suggest they may be more closely related to glomeridesmidans, a poorly known order that does not enroll. Robert Latzel
Robert Latzel (28 October 1845 – 15 December 1919) was an Austrian myriapodologist and entomologist who published a series of pioneering works on millipedes, centipedes, and allies. His collection of myriapod specimens, today housed in the Natural History Museum of Vienna, includes many type specimens. His monographs on the myriapods of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were the first comprehensive treatments of the large region's centipede and millipede faunas. He named nearly 130 taxa of millipedes (1 genus, 2 subgenera, 69 species and 56 variations) and over 40 centipede groups (2 genera, 29 species and 12 variations), as well as four taxa each of pauropods and symphylans.
