Glasgow International Exhibition Cup
The Glasgow Exhibition Cup was a football competition held as part of the Glasgow International Trade Fair of 1901. Eight Scottish First Division sides (acknowledged as the leading clubs in the country) were invited to the tournament, and matches were played at a specially built site at Gilmorehill, located adjacent to the University of Glasgow and near to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery where the main part of the exhibition was being held. Played across August and early September 1901, Rangers won the competition, defeating Celtic in the final – a cup and gold medals were awarded to the winning team. The following year the 1902 Ibrox disaster occurred, and Rangers organised a tournament with its proceeds going to benefit the victims, offering up the Exhibition Cup as a prize for the winners. Alex Smith (footballer, Born 1876)
Alexander Smith (7 November 1875 – 12 November 1954) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside left for Rangers and the Scotland national team. Career Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Smith signed for Rangers in April 1894 from local side Darvel F.C., having been introduced at the suggestion of Nicol Smith (a defender who had made the same move a year earlier and came from the same village, but was not a relation). He stayed with the Ibrox club for 21 years until retiring in 1915, was part of Rangers' treble-winning ( Scottish Football League title, Glasgow Cup and Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup) teams of 1896–97, 1899–1900 and 1910–11, and played in 69 of the club's 74 matches during their run of four consecutive championships from 1898 to 1902. Finlay Speedie
Finlay Ballantyne Speedie (18 August 1880 – 5 February 1953) was a Scottish footballer who played for Rangers, Newcastle United and Scotland in the 1900s. He was a versatile forward who was most at home at inside left. Career Speedie began his career with junior clubs Clydebank and Strathclyde (playing for both in different competitions) then joined Rangers in 1900. Playing under William Wilton he won two League championships, a Scottish Cup, two Glasgow Cups, a Charity Cup and the 1901 Glasgow Exhibition Cup. He left Rangers in 1906 after a match against Celtic was played for his benefit and joined Newcastle United, where he won the English First Division in 1906–07 in his first season. James Wilkie (footballer)
James Small Wilkie (1893 – 23 July 1947) was a British politician and trade unionist. Born in Edinburgh, Wilkie served in World War I with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. After the war, he worked as a cooper, and joined the National Association of Coopers, winning election to its committee, then as its president, and finally working full time as its secretary. In order to take up this post, he moved to London, where he became active in the Labour Party, and won election to Battersea Metropolitan Borough Council. In 1926, the various coopers' trade unions formed the Coopers' Federation of Great Britain, and in 1942, Wilkie was elected as its general secretary. David McDougall (Rangers Footballer)
David (Davie) McDougall (14 July 1858 – 7 November 1943) was a United Party and an Independent Member of Parliament for Mataura, in the South Island of New Zealand. Biography Early life Born in Glasgow, Scotland, McDougall came to New Zealand with his wife in 1884, arriving at Port Chalmers on 11 May on the '' Aorangi''. Political career McDougall served on the Gore Borough Council and was Mayor of Gore in 1913, 1915–1919, 1921–1923 and 1927–1928. Neilly Gibson
Neil Gibson (23 February 1873 – January 1947) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Rangers, Partick Thistle and the Scotland national team. Career Adept at playing in either left or right wing half position, Gibson joined Rangers in 1894 from local Larkhall side Royal Albert, where he had been for only a few months after moving from Junior team Larkhall Thistle. During his time at Ibrox, he won four consecutive league titles ( 1898–99 (in which the team won all 18 fixtures), 1899–1900, 1900–01 and 1901–02) as well as the Scottish Cup in 1896–97, 1897–98, and 1902–03 plus five Glasgow Cups and three Glasgow Merchants Charity Cups. Robert Scott Gibson Neill (24 September 1875 – 2 March 1913) was a Scottish footballer who played for Hibernian, Liverpool, Rangers and Scotland. He played at centre half and at wing half. John Drummond (13 April 1870 – 24 January 1935) was a Scottish footballer who played as a left back for Falkirk, Rangers and the Scotland national team. Career Drummond joined Rangers from Falkirk (who had yet to join the Scottish Football League) in 1892. Nicol Smith
Nicol Smith (25 December 1873 – 6 January 1905) was a Scottish footballer who played for Rangers. Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Smith played as a fullback for local sides Vale of Irvine, Royal Albert and Darvel, earning junior international selection, before joining Rangers in 1893. He made only two league appearances in his first season at the club, but by 1893–94, he had established himself in the Rangers team, missing just one of the 18 league fixtures. During that season he was also responsible for bringing Alex Smith (who came from the same village but was not a relation) to the club, and the winger went on to become an important member of the side for the next 20 years. Smith was part of Rangers' first ever Scottish Cup win in 1894, playing in all six games, including the 3–1 final win over Celtic.
