The 1895–96 English Football season fell in what was to be called Aston Villa's golden era. Under George Ramsay's management committee Villa were League champions for the second time in their history. The 1895–96 Division 1 season was the second season of the elite level Second City Derby against local rivals Small Heath. There were debuts for Jimmy Crabtree (176), Johnny Campbell, Jack Cowan, Edward Harris and Jeremiah Griffiths. Season Highlights Derby County F.C., Derby County won all 10 home games and led the table at the end of December, with Aston Villa F.C., Villa in third. Six consecutive wins took Villa to the top in January and they finished with a four-point margin over Derby, taking the Football League, title when Derby dropped a point on 4 April. Aston Villa F
Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in medieval times to replace an earlier church. The body of the church was rebuilt by J. A. Chatwin during the period 1879 to 1890; the 15th century tower and spire, which was partly rebuilt in 1776, being the only survivors of the medieval building. The ancient parish of Aston (known as Aston juxta Birmingham) was large. It was separated from the parish of Birmingham by AB Row, which currently exists in the Eastside of the city at just 50 yards in length. Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The EFL is divided into the Championship, League One and League Two, with 24 clubs in each division, 72 in total, with promotion and relegation between them; the top Championship clubs change places with the lowest-placed clubs in the Premier League, and the bottom clubs of League Two with the top clubs of the National League. Jim Roach (footballer)
James Roach (12 January 1864 – 1955) was an English professional association football, footballer who made 15 appearances in the Football League First Division, First Division of the Football League playing for Birmingham City F.C., Small Heath. Jim Roach was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire and played as a goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper. Roach played football for local clubs and in the army before joining Birmingham City F.C., Small Heath in 1895 by which time he was over 30. He made his debut 1895-96 BCFC season, on 7 September 1895 in a 7–3 defeat at Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa, and retained the starting place for a run of games which included several more heavy defeats, until relinquishing it to William Meates halfway through the season.Matthews, p. 143. He then went on to play for Hereford Town F.C., Hereford Town and Bristol Rovers F.C., Bristol Eastville Rovers. Roach died in Birmingham in 1955 aged about 91. References
