Gladstone Harbour is a locality in the Gladstone Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Gladstone Harbour had a population of 29 people. There are three towns in Gladstone Harbour, all on Facing Island: Northcliffe, Farmers Point and Gatcombe. Geography Although predominantly water, the locality includes Facing Island and Quoin Island (both of which are partially developed) and a small undeveloped part of southern Curtis Island which may be a separate unnamed island at high tide. Facing Island () is long and protects the harbour from the Coral Sea. There are two passages from the harbour to the sea. The North Channel () exits the harbour between the south of Curtis Island and the north of Facing Island, while the Gatcombe Channel () exits the harbour to the south of Facing Island and Boyne Island. Electoral District Of Gladstone
Gladstone is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The seat was created as a reconfigured version of Port Curtis for the 1992 election. It consists of the city of Gladstone and some of the towns of the former Shire of Calliope. This includes the localities of Ambrose, Benaraby, Boyne Island, Builyan, Mount Larcom, Tannum Sands and Ubobo. The town of Calliope is now part of the Callide electoral district. The current member is Labor MP Glenn Butcher. Butcher won the seat following the retirement of long-serving independent Liz Cunningham, who won the seat on National Party preferences after defeating then Labor MP Neil Bennett at the 1995 election. Cunningham was a well-known local figure, having previously been Mayor of the Shire of Calliope prior to entering State politics. Flatback Turtle
The Australian flatback sea turtle (''Natator depressus'') is a species of sea turtle in the family Cheloniidae. The species is endemic to the sandy beaches and shallow coastal waters of the Australian continental shelf. This turtle gets its common name from the fact that its shell has a flattened or lower dome than the other sea turtles. It can be olive green to grey with a cream underside. It averages from 76 to 96 cm (30 to 38 inches) in carapace length and can weigh from 70 to 90 kg (154 to 198 lb). Hawksbill Turtle
The hawksbill sea turtle (''Eretmochelys imbricata'') is a critically endangered sea turtle belonging to the family Cheloniidae. It is the only extant species in the genus ''Eretmochelys''. The species has a global distribution, that is largely limited to tropical and subtropical marine and estuary ecosystems. The hawksbill's appearance is similar to that of other marine turtles. Gladstone Harbour Festival
The Gladstone Harbour Festival is an annual event held every Easter in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.Fountain, RacheFrom the back of a truck to mega-festival status ABC Capricornia, 3 February 2009. The Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race is held annually, starting on Good Friday. The premier blue water classic begins from Shorncliffe in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, and finishes in Gladstone Harbour. Yachts compete for the Courier Mail Cup, one of the oldest perpetual trophies in Australia that has been competed for on a continual basis. William Ewart Gladstone ( ; 29 December 1809 – 19 May 1898) was a British statesman and Liberal politician. In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four non-consecutive terms (the most of any British prime minister) beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. Port Curtis (bay)
Port Curtis is a both a port and a pastoral district in Queensland, Australia. It is located off the coast of the present-day city of Gladstone and was the original name of the township. The Port Curtis pastoral district in and around Gladstone was gazetted on 23 March 1868. History Port Curtis (the bay) was named by Matthew Flinders on 1 August 1802 after Vice Admiral Sir Roger Curtis of the Royal Navy. Curtis had assisted Flinders with repairs to HMS Investigator in Cape Town in October 1801. Port Curtis was the capital of North Australia, a short-lived British colony established in 1846 and extinguished the following year.
