Ernest Gustave Girardot
Ernest Gustave Girardot (1840–1904) was born into a well-known artistic French family and worked as a genre and portrait painter throughout his life. His portraits of Tennyson and Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton, Lady Lytton are held in high regard. Girardot exhibited between 1880 and 1904 at the Royal Academy in London, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He became a member of the Society of British Artists in 1874. Girardot's home and workplace were at first in Notting Hill and later at 'The Studio', Upper Park Road, Haverstock Hill, London. He was a friend and correspondent of James McNeill Whistler - many of their letters have survived. Etienne Girardot (22 February 1856 – 10 November 1939) was a diminutive stage and film actor of Anglo-French parentage born in London, England. Biography The son of French painter Ernest Gustave Girardot, he studied at an art school, but left at age seventeen to go on stage. Having played in the provinces, he made his debut on the London stage at the Haymarket Theatre. He went to America in 1893, where he continued his career. He was a success, with numerous Broadway shows to his credit, including the 1893 production of ''Charley's Aunt'', in which he played Lord Fancourt Babberley for three years. He also worked in film, both silents and talkies, debuting in 1911 in ''Intrepid Davy''. Among his film roles were the harmless lunatic who fancies himself a millionaire in the 1934 screwball comedy ''Twentieth Century'', with John Barrymore and Carole Lombard, and the harassed coroner in three murder mysteries starring William Powell as detective Philo Vance. Léonce Girardot (30 April 1864 – 7 September 1922) was a French racing driver. He drove for Panhard & Levassor, the leading brand of this era and his strongest competitors were his teammates Fernand Charron and René de Knyff. His first major race came in the 1897 season, when in the Paris- Dieppe race he took sixteenth place. Twenty-fourth place in the 1897 Paris-Trouville and the retirement from the first race in the next season 1898 Paris-Bourdeaux followed before Girardot finished in second place in the 1898 Paris–Amsterdam–Paris. He continued with the same result at the Tour de France for automobiles in 1899 and Paris-Lyon 1900.
