Giorgio Alberino
Giorgio Alberino (Alessandria, Piedmont, 1575/6 – 1625/6) was an Italian painter, depicting sacred subjects, active in Casale Monferrato in early 17th century. Biography Alberino is cited by Luigi Lanzi as training with Guglielmo Caccia (il Moncalvo), where he cites Della Valle, that Alberino was a fellow student with a painter named N or M Sacchi (il Sacchi di Casale). However, in the entry for the Encyclopedia Treccani, he is identified as likely a collaborator of Moncalvo, who had trained likely in Vercelli, where he married the daughter of the painter Amedeo Giovenone. He worked with Moncalvo in the Gallery of the Royal Palace of Turin in 1607. Alessandria
Alessandria (; pms, Lissandria ) is a city and ''comune'' in Piedmont, Italy, and the capital of the Province of Alessandria. The city is sited on the alluvial plain between the Tanaro and the Bormida rivers, about east of Turin. Alessandria is also a major railway hub. History Alessandria was founded in 1168 with a charter as a free comune; it was sited upon a preexisting urban nucleus, to serve as a stronghold for the Lombard League, defending the traditional liberties of the communes of northern Italy against the Imperial forces of Frederick Barbarossa. Casale Monferrato
Casale Monferrato () is a town in the Piedmont region of Italy, in the province of Alessandria. It is situated about east of Turin on the right bank of the Po, where the river runs at the foot of the Montferrat hills. Beyond the river lies the vast plain of the Po valley. An ancient Roman ''municipium'', the town has been the most important trade and manufacturing centre of the area for centuries. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Casale became a free municipality and, in the 15th and early 16th centuries, served as the capital of the House of Palaiologos. Then in 1536 the town passed to the Gonzagas who fortified it with a large citadel. In the 17th century Casale was heavily involved in the War of the Mantuan Succession and besieged by French and Spanish troops. Luigi Lanzi
Luigi Lanzi (14 June 1732 – 30 March 1810) was an Italian art historian and archaeologist. When he died he was buried in the church of the Santa Croce at Florence by the side of Michelangelo. Biography Born in Treia, Lanzi was educated as a priest. He entered the Order of the Jesuits, resided at Rome and in 1773 was appointed keeper of the galleries of Florence, where he became president of the Accademia della Crusca. He thereafter studied Italian painting and Etruscan antiquities and language. In the one field his labors are represented by his ''Storia Pittorica dell' Italia'', the first portion of which, containing the Florentine, Sienese, Roman and Neapolitan schools, appeared in 1792, the rest in 1796. In archaeology his great achievement was ''Saggio di lingua Etrusca'' (1789), followed by ''Saggio delle lingue d' Italia'' in 1806. Guglielmo Caccia called il Moncalvo (9 May 15681625) was an Italian painter of sacred subjects in a Mannerism, Mannerist style. Biography He was born in Montabone near Acqui Terme, Acqui. He is said to have been a pupil of Lorenzo Sabbatini. He started painting in Milan, then worked in Pavia, where he was made a citizen. He also painted in Novara, Vercelli, Alessandria, and Turin, and Genoa. His best work, ''Deposition from the Cross'', is at the church of San Gaudenzio, Novara. He also painted for the cupola of the dome of San Paolo in Novara. He painted for the Church of the Conventuali in Moncalvo. He painted a ''St. Anthony Abbot with St Paul'' for the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, Milan, Sant'Antonio Abate in Milan. He painted in the Sacro Monte di Crea. Vercelli (; pms, Vërsèj ), is a city and ''comune'' of 46,552 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Province of Vercelli, Piedmont, northern Italy. The Sacro Monte di Crea (literally "Sacred Mountain of Crea", although it is built on a hill rather than a mountain) is a Roman Catholic sanctuary in the ''comune'' of Serralunga di Crea, Piedmont, northern Italy. It is reached via a steeply ascending route which winds through a wooded natural park, whose flora was catalogued by the Casalese photographer and polymath Francesco Negri. History Construction began in 1589, around an existing sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary whose creation is traditionally attributed to Saint Eusebius of Vercelli, around 350 AD. Eusebius is also said to have installed the statue of the Madonna which is still venerated in the sanctuary.
