Giorgi Family
The House of Giorgi, Zorzi or Đurđević was a noble family of the Republic of Venice and the Republic of Ragusa. History Tradition links the Zorzi to the origins of the city of Venice. In 1817, Antonio Longo wrote that they came from Moravia and Silesia; entered Italy in 411 AD and took up residence at Pavia; and after the invasion of Attila in 453 AD were among the founders of Venice. The ''Almanach de Gotha'' enumerates it among the eleven oldest native families of the Republic of Ragusa, and members of the family were still living in the city in the 19th century. The first documented mention of the family dates from the tenth century: in 964 Gregorio di Andrea de Georgii was bishop of the island of San Pietro di Castello, formerly known as Olivolo, in the Venetian Lagoon. Ignjat Đurđević
Ignjat Đurđević (also Ignazio Giorgi; February 1675 – 21 January 1737) was a baroque poet and translator from the Republic of Ragusa, best known for his long poem ''Uzdasi Mandaljene pokornice'' ("''Sighs of Repentant Magdalene''"). He wrote poetry in three languages: Latin, Italian and Croatian. Biography Đurđević was born in Ragusa to Bernardo Giorgi and Teresa Zlatarić. He did not belong to the House of Giorgi, but to a minor, recently ennobled, family, the Giorgi di Bernardo. He was a member of the Great Council (1693), duke of Šipan Island (1695) and Lovrijenac fortress captain (1696). As a member of a rich and respectable family, he lived recklessly and often in debauchery. His love adventures cost him the position of the duke on Šipan. Because of his unrequited love towards a ''diklica'' (girl) from Dubrovnik and a libertine poem he wrote to her, Đurđević even had to leave the city for a while. Pope Martin V ( la, Martinus V; it, Martino V; January/February 1369 – 20 February 1431), born Otto (or Oddone) Colonna, was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 11 November 1417 to his death in February 1431. Marino Zorzi
Marino Zorzi (c. 1231 – 3 July 1312), born in Venice, was the 50th Doge of the Republic of Venice, from 23 August 1311 until his renunciation in 1312 and withdrawal to a hermitic life. He was married to Agneta (or Agnese, supposed to be surnamed Querini). Considered to have been a devout man, he had served as an ambassador to Rome. He may have been elected to decrease tensions in the city caused by the attempted revolt of Bajamonte Tiepolo as well as tensions with Rome, still angry with Venice over her occupation of the city of Ferrara (1308–09). Zorzi had not been the first choice as Doge; Stefano Giustinian had been chosen first, but Giustinian had refused the honor. The elderly Zorzi did not succeed in re-establishing good relations with the Papacy and his short reign was characterized by several natural calamities.
