Gilman (Amtrak Station)
Gilman station is an Amtrak intercity train station in Gilman, Illinois, United States. The stop is on their ''Illini and Saluki'' route. Service began at Gilman on October 26, 1986, when the ''Illini'' began stopping there. It was the first passenger service at Gilman since the creation of Amtrak on May 1, 1971. The northbound ''City of New Orleans'' also served Gilman until November 10, 1996 The previous railroad station in Gilman was in the center of the city, located at the diamond junction between Illinois Central's main line to New Orleans and the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway (TP&W). The northwest quadrant of the junction contained the Illinois Central's main line to Springfield and St Louis, which split with the New Orleans main line just north of the station. Gilman, Illinois
Gilman is a city in Douglas Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,738 at the 2020 census. Geography Gilman is located in the western part of the county at the intersection of three major highways: Interstate 57, U.S. Route 24, and U.S. Route 45. As a result, it has been named "The City of the Crossroads". Amtrak, the national passenger rail service, provides service at the Gilman station. Gilman is west of Watseka, the Iroqouis county seat; east of Chenoa and Interstate 55; north of Champaign; and south of Chicago. A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. Island Platform
An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. The ''Illini'' and ''Saluki'' are a pair of passenger trains operated by Amtrak along a route between Chicago and Carbondale, Illinois. They are part of Amtrak's Illinois Service and are primarily funded by the state of Illinois. The route is coextensive with the far northern leg of the long-distance ''City of New Orleans''. The ''City of New Orleans'' is an Amtrak passenger train which operates on an overnight schedule between Chicago and New Orleans. The train is a successor to the Illinois Central Railroad's ''Panama Limited''. The original ''City of New Orleans'' began in 1947 as part of the Illinois Central Railroad, and was the longest daylight run in the United States. The daylight train under that name ran through 1971, when it was moved to an overnight schedule as the ''Panama Limited.'' The present name was brought back in 1981, still on an overnight schedule. Level Junction
A level junction (or in the United Kingdom a flat crossing) is a railway junction that has a track configuration in which merging or crossing railroad lines provide track connections with each other that require trains to cross over in front of opposing traffic at grade (i.e. on the level). The cross-over structure is sometimes called a diamond junction or diamond crossing in reference to the diamond-shaped center. The two tracks need not necessarily be of the same gauge. Toledo, Peoria And Western Railway
The Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway is a short line railroad that operates of track from Mapleton, Illinois, through Peoria across Illinois to Logansport, Indiana. TP&W has trackage rights between Galesburg, Illinois, and Peoria, between Logansport and Kokomo, Indiana, and between Reynolds, Indiana, and Lafayette, Indiana.
