Gilles Terral
Gilles Terral (1943 – 12 August 1998) was a French entomologist. He specialised in Lepidoptera Parnassiinae and Saturniidae. As a Parnassius specialist he made an expedition to Ladakh with Jean-Claude Weiss in July 1983. As a Saturnid specialist he wrote articles with Philippe Darge and Claude Lemaire (see below). He was working on a book on the Saturniidae of the world, to be published by Sciences Nat, most of the colour separations of the photos were already done for the printing. His collection of Saturniidae (251 boxes) is now at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Lyon. Works * 1991. Entomologist
Entomology () is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. The Parnassiinae or snow Apollos are a subfamily of the swallowtail butterfly family, Papilionidae. The subfamily includes about 50 medium-sized, white or yellow species. Saturniidae
Saturniidae, commonly known as saturniids, is a family of Lepidoptera with an estimated 2,300 described species. The family contains some of the largest species of moths in the world. Notable members include the emperor moths, royal moths, and giant silk moths. Adults are characterized by large, lobed wings, heavy bodies covered in hair-like scales, and reduced mouthparts. Parnassius
''Parnassius'' is a genus of northern circumpolar and montane (alpine and Himalayan) butterflies usually known as Apollos or snow Apollos. They can vary in colour and form significantly based on their altitude. They also show an adaptation to high altitudes called altitudinal melanism. They show dark bodies and darkened colouration at the wingbase which helps them warm faster using the sun. Although classified under the swallowtail butterfly family, none of the ''Parnassius'' species possesses tails. The larvae feed on species of plants belonging to the Papaveraceae and Crassulaceae families, and like the other swallowtail butterfly larvae, possess an osmeterium. Sciences Nat was the academic publisher specialising in entomology of the Societé Sciences Nat. The society was established in 1971 and based in the rue de la Mare in Paris. Three years later it moved to the rue des Alouettes and later to Venette near Compiègne. The company was directed first by Roger Ehrman and then by Jacques Rigout. In 1981 the publication of '' The Beetles of the World'' started, a series of 30 volumes devoted to the Coleoptera. The 24 first were published by Sciences Nat, the later ones by Hillside Books, Canterbury. Bulletin De La Société Sciences Nat
The ''Bulletin de la Société Sciences Nat'' was a French entomological scientific journal. It was published by Sciences Nat and established in 1972. History Initially, the ''Bulletin'' was sent free of charge to French entomologists. Starting in 1975, a small contribution was asked and more than 400 subscriptions were received, increasing to 450 in 1977. In 1978 there were 610 subscribers, of which 550 in France; the number increased to 670 the next year. From then on the circulation varied between 650 and 950. The last issue published was #83 in 1995. Production The journal was originally simply typed and printed by Sciences Nat on a small stencil duplicating machine which was rotated by hand with a crank. From 1974, it was produced by photocopying on a Rank Xerox machine. In 1977, a small Gestetner duplicator was obtained. During this time, pages were simply stapled together. Besoiro
''Besoiro'' is a French entomological scientific journal. It is published by Patrick Arnaud and was established in 1995. The name means beetle in Portuguese. The taxa described are included in the Zoological Record. Following the cessation of publication of the ''Bulletin de la Société Sciences Nat'' in 1995, the journals ''Besoiro'' and '' Coléoptères'' were founded to accommodate some of the manuscripts that would have gone to the older journal.
