Gigafactories
Gigafactory or GigaFactory is a generic term referring to "...facilities that produce batteries for electric vehicles on a large scale". The term was initially used by the electric car manufacturer Tesla, Inc. to refer to their battery manufacturing facilities. The concept's success has led to the genericization of the term. Gigafactory 1
Gigafactory Nevada (also known as Giga Nevada or Gigafactory 1) is a lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle component factory in Storey County, Nevada, US. The facility, located east of Reno, is owned and operated by Tesla, Inc., and supplies the battery packs for the company's electric vehicles (except vehicles produced at Giga Shanghai). If fully built out, the building will have the largest footprint in the world. The facility is located at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) and employed around 7,000 people at the end of 2018, with a goal of hiring thousands more with a total of nearly 10,000 statewide. Future manufacturing programs may also move to Nevada. The factory started limited production of the Tesla Powerwall home energy storage device in the first quarter of 2016 using battery cells produced elsewhere, and began mass production of cells in January 2017. Gigafactory 3
Gigafactory Shanghai ( zh, ) (also known as Giga Shanghai, or Gigafactory 3) is the first oversea factory, located in Shanghai, China and operated by Tesla, Inc. The facility currently hosts the final assembly of the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, with Model Y deliveries slated to begin in January 2021. The factory's initial production rate target is 3,000 cars a week, eventually ramping up to 250,000 electric cars per year. However it tripled the original capacity less than 3 years. The first assembled Model 3s were delivered in December 2019, just twelve months after Tesla began site grading on the Gigafactory in December 2018. Gigafactory 4
Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg (also known as Giga Berlin or Gigafactory 4) is a manufacturing plant for Tesla, Inc. in Grünheide, Brandenburg, Germany. The campus is located south-east of central Berlin and some southeast of the Berlin state boundary at Erkner and Rahnsdorf. Proximity to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (about west) was explicitly cited as a factor in choosing the site. It is Tesla's first manufacturing location in Europe. The facility and its Brandenburg location were announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on November 12th, 2019 at the Das Goldene Lenkrad award show. The Tesla Fremont Factory is an automobile manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, operated by Tesla, Inc. The facility opened as General Motors' Fremont Assembly in 1962, and was later operated by NUMMI, a GM–Toyota joint venture. Tesla took ownership in 2010. The plant manufactures the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, employing 22,000 people . Generic Term
Trademark distinctiveness is an important concept in the law governing trademarks and service marks. A trademark may be eligible for registration, or registrable, if it performs the essential trademark function, and has distinctive character. Gigafactory New York (also known as Giga New York or Gigafactory 2) is a photovoltaic (PV) cell factory leased by Tesla in Riverbend, Buffalo, New York. The factory, owned by the State of New York, was built on brownfield land remediated from a former steel mill. Construction of the factory, rebranded as RiverBend, started in 2014 and was completed in 2016–17. In 2013, the site of Giga New York was planned as a clean energy business incubation center. As SolarCity acquired Silevo in 2014 and merged into Tesla two years later, the factory was planned.
