Gialias
The Gialias (also Yialias; , ) is the second longest river in Cyprus. It has a length of , river originating in the Troodos Mountains and Mesaoria. In its course passes through the valley of Mesaoria and flows into Famagusta Bay. Its depth reaches up to 9 meters. In 1952, the Pano Lythrodonta dam with a capacity of 32,000 m3 and a height of 10 meters was built in Gialias. Folk tradition There are many folk traditions associated with Gialias. In the village of Nisou in the Nicosia District, it is believed that it was once divided into two to be reunited at another point, where an island was created where the name of the village comes from. Another tradition says that in the area of the village of Assia, Pedieos and Gialias were united, the countess of the area decided to separate them and bring the riverbed next to the village, to its current riverbed. Troodos Mountains
Troodos (sometimes spelled Troödos; el, Τρόοδος ; tr, Trodos Dağları) is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in roughly the center of the island. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus ( el, Όλυμπος), also known as Chionistra ( el, Χιονίστρα), at , which hosts the Sun Valley and North Face ski areas with their five ski lifts. The Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus. Famagusta Bay ( gr, Κόλπος της Αμμοχώστου, tr, Mağusa Körfezi) is the easternmost body of water that is formed by the Karpasia peninsula and Protaras. Mesaoria
The Mesaoria ( el, Μεσαορία, tr, Mesarya) is a broad, sweeping plain which makes up the north centre of the island of Cyprus. Geography The Mesaoria is the name given to the broad tract of plain which extends across the island from the Bay of Famagusta in the east to that of Morphou in the west, which is a length of 96 km, with a breadth varying from 16 to 32 km. The streams which traverse it are mere winter torrents, which descend from the southern chain but scarcely reach the sea. The Pedias (Pediaeus) and lalias (Yialias, Idalias) lose most of their flood waters in the marshes about Salamis, near the Bay of Famagusta. The Pedias rises near Machaira and passes close to Nicosia, indeed flowed through it before the river was diverted by the Venetians. Nisou
Nisou ( gr, Νήσου, tr, Dizdarköy) is a village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus, just north of Pera Chorio and it is about 15 kilometres from the capital. It is built at the north bank of the Yialia River. The old road of Nicosia-Limassol goes through the village, while the new road comes from northwest of the village. In the older years, the village resembled a small island since it was surrounded by the Yialia River. The river would come from the mountains of Machera and would split at the Nisou area into two parts which would join again towards the East (in the Dali area). That is how it got its name Nisos or Nisou. Nisou had historically been a mixed village, with 366 Greek Cypriots and 108 Turkish Cypriots recorded in the census of 1960. Nicosia District
Nicosia District (Greek: Eπαρχία Λευκωσίας) is one of the six districts of Cyprus. Its main town is the island country's capital city, Nicosia. The TRNC-controlled northern part of the district is the Lefkoşa District of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Pedieos (also Pediaios or Pediaeus or Pithkias; Greek: Πεδιαίος/Πηθκιάς, Turkish: ''Kanlı Dere'') is the longest river in Cyprus.
