Giacinto Gigante
Giacinto Gigante (1806–1876) was an Italian painter, engraver, and teacher. He was known for his landscape and vista paintings, exemplary works of the Neapolitan School of Posillipo. Biography Early life Giacinto Gigante was born on July 11, 1806, in Posillipo, Naples. He was the first son of Gaetano Gigante and Anna Maria Fatati. Encouraged by his father, who was also a painter, Gigante began his artistic education in 1818 and began producing landscapes and portraits. Among his early works is ''Vecchio pescatore seduto'' which, next to the signature, is inscribed: "This sailor was the first figure that I made from life, in 1818." In 1820, together with the painter Achille Vianelli, Gigante began to privately frequent the atelier of Jacob Wilhelm Hüber, an academic German landscape painter. Jacob Philipp Hackert
Jacob Philipp Hackert (15 September 1737 – 28 April 1807) was a landscape painter from Brandenburg, who did most of his work in Italy. Biography Hackert was born in 1737 in Prenzlau in the Margraviate of Brandenburg (now in Germany). He trained with his father Philipp (a portraitist and painter of animals) and his uncle, before going to the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1758. Later he traveled to Swedish Pomerania and Stockholm, at the invitation of Adolf Friedrich von Olthof, a Swedish government official and businessman. For a time, he lived with Von Olthof and painted decorative murals at his estate. He spent from 1765 to 1768 in Paris with the Swiss artist Balthasar Anton Dunker, where he focused on painting in gouache. Anton Sminck Van Pitloo
Antonie or Anton Sminck Pitloo (21 April or 8 May 1790 – 22 June 1837) was a Dutch painter. His surname was originally Pitlo, but he added the extra "o" because he was often mistaken for an Italian while resident in Italy. In Italian he is also known as Antonio van Pitloo. Biography Pitloo was born in Arnhem. He started studying painting first at Paris and then at Rome, where there was already an international artistic colony, in 1811. He took advantage of a scholarship offered by Louis Bonaparte, the King of Holland. In 1815, after the fall of Bonaparte, the scholarship payments ceased. He was then invited to Naples by the Russian diplomat and art connoisseur Count Grigory Vladimirovich Orloff (1777 – 22 June 1826).
