Ghana Prisons Service
The Ghana Prisons Service is responsible for the safe custody of prisoners in Ghana, as well as their welfare, reformation and rehabilitation. It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior. Administration The prisons service is governed by the Prisons Service Council, an advisory and supervisory body. Its Functions includes advising the President on "matters of policy in relation to the organisation and maintenance of the prisons system in Ghana." The Prisons Headquarters in the Greater Accra region houses the Controller-General of Prisons and two Deputy Controller-General of Prisons, Seven Controllers of Prisons and other principal office holders. The current Director General of the service is Patrick Darko Missah. Prisons There are 47 prison establishments in Ghana, including twelve major male prisons. Borstal Institute For Juveniles
The Borstal Institute for juveniles now called The Senior Correctional Centre is a juvenile correction institute under the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS). The centre is a correction centre for people who are under 18 years old and have been convicted of criminal or civil offenses. The period that a convict spends in the centre is aimed at reforming him or her so they can fit into society easily after their stay at the centre. Patrick Darko Missah
Patrick Darko Missah is a Ghanaian agriculturalist and human resource person. He has been a prison officer since 1989 and was appointed in 2017 by President Nana Akuffo-Addo as the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service. Early life and education Missah had his secondary education at Suhum Secondary Technical School, where he obtained his O level certificate and proceeded to Ofori Panin Secondary School for his A level education. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree in agriculture from the University of Ghana. Inhuman Or Degrading Treatment
Cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (CIDT) is treatment of persons which is contrary to human rights or dignity, but is not classified as torture. It is forbidden by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the United Nations Convention against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Fort James (Ghana)
Fort James (alternatively referred to as James Fort) is a fort located in Accra, Ghana. It was built by the Royal African Company of England (RAC) as a trading post for both gold and slaves in 1673, where it joined the Dutch Fort Crêvecœur (1649), and the Danish Fort Christiansborg (1652) along the coast of the then Gold Coast. Along with other castles and forts in Ghana, Fort James was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 because of its importance during the European colonial period. Fort James was likely named after James, then Duke of York, later King James II, who was Governor of the RAC at the time it was built and after whom the adjacent town of Jamestown in Accra is also named. The fort stands next to Jamestown Lighthouse and from the colonial era up to 2008, served as a prison.
