Erich Engel
Erich Gustav Otto Engel (14 February 1891 – 10 May 1966) was a German film and theatre director.He is often confused with another German film director called Erich Engels, who specialised in comedy, and crime films. Biography Engel was born in Hamburg, where later he studied at the School of Applied Arts. After finishing there he worked briefly as a journalist, then learnt acting at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg, after which he spent several years with a touring theatre company. In 1917 and 1918 Engel was the dramaturgist in the ''Deutsches Schauspielhaus'', and later in the ''Hamburger Kammerspiele''. After a short engagement with the '' Bayerische Staatstheater'' in Munich he moved in 1924 to Berlin. At the '' Deutsche Theater'' he produced, among other pieces, Bertolt Brecht's '' Im Dickicht der Städte'' and soon became one of the foremost interpreters of Brecht's works on the German stage. Wolfgang Heinz (actor)
David Hirsch (18 May 1900 – 30 October 1982), known as Wolfgang Heinz, was an Austrian and East German actor and theater director. He served as President of the Academy of the Arts in Berlin between 1968 and 1974. Biography Early life Born to journalist and theater director Julius Hirsch and his wife Camilla, David Hirsch was the half-brother of Heinrich Theodor Hirsch. He left the Archduke Rainer Gymnasium in Vienna at the age of 17 to pursue an acting career. Heinz was exempted from military service due to a lung illness. He moved to Germany, working in theaters in Friedrichroda and Eisenach during 1917. Although he never attended an acting studio, he was also given roles in theaters in Berlin, Hamburg and other cities. In November 1918, he joined the cast of the Deutsches Theater. Christine Laszar
Christine Laszar (19 December 1931 – 17 November 2021) was a German actress. Biography Laszar was born Christine "Christel" Lazarus in Ortelsburg, East Prussia, Prussia, Germany (today Szczytno, Poland). She was educated at the West Berlin Max Reinhardtstageschool and began her career at the Renaissance-Theater (Berlin), the "Die Stachelschweine" and the Munich "Schaubude". She also appeared at the Volksbühne Berlin (East Berlin). In the 1950s, she married Rudolf Schündler (divorced). In 1958, she moved to East Germany and married Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler (the marriage was divorced shortly after). Laszar appeared in several movies of the DEFA. In the early 1970s, she worked at the Deutscher Fernsehfunk and retired for health reasons in the 1980s. Günther Simon
Günther Simon (11 May 1925 – 25 June 1972) was an East German actor. Biography Early life A bank clerk's son, Simon attended an acting school already in '' Gymnasium''. At the age of 16, he was sent to a premilitary training camp of the Hitler Youth and then drafted to the Reich Labour Service. He volunteered to join the paratroopers in August 1943. He was captured by American troops near Normandy and shipped to a POW camp in Colorado, where he acted in the camp's makeshift theater. Breakthrough After returning home in 1947, Simon took private acting lessons with Karl Meixner in the Hebbel Theater in Berlin. He made his debut on stage in the Municipal Theater of Köthen in 1948, in a production of Dmitry Scheglov's ''The Storm''. East German Films
This is a list, in year order, of the most notable films produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) from 1945 until German Reunification in October 1990. The state owned East German film company DEFA produced about 800 feature films between 1946 and 1992. Besides DEFA, the state broadcaster DFF and the Deutsche Hochschule für Filmkunst (now the Filmuniversität Babelsberg) were the only other organizations in the GDR that produced feature films for cinematic release, although far fewer than DEFA. DEFA also produced about 750 animated movies and more than 2500 documentaries and short films.
