Gervais Baudouin
Gervais Baudouin (c. 1645 – 1700) was a surgeon born in France who came to New France about 1677. Baudouin's practice in Quebec consisted of being the doctor to the local Ursulines as well as the seminary of Quebec. In 1695, he was appointed surgeon-major of Quebec, a position he held until his death because of an epidemic. He was survived by his wife and eight children. Three daughters became nuns and one son, Michel, became a Jesuit priest. New France (french: Nouvelle-France) was the area colonized by France in North America, beginning with the exploration of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and ending with the cession of New France to Great Britain and Spain in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris. Ursulines
The Ursulines, also known as the Order of Saint Ursula (post-nominals: OSU), is an enclosed religious order of consecrated women that branched off from the Angelines, also known as the Company of Saint Ursula, in 1572. Like the Angelines, they trace their origins to their foundress Saint Angela Merici and place themselves under the patronage of Saint Ursula. While the Ursulines took up a monastic way of life under the Rule of Saint Augustine, the Angelines operate as a secular institute. The largest group within the Ursulines is the Ursulines of the Roman Union. Michel Baudouin
Michel Baudouin (Baudoin), (16 March 1691 – 1768), a Jesuit missionary, was born at Quebec and was the brother of Gervais Baudoin and son of Gervais Baudouin. Michel began his Jesuit noviciate at Bordeaux, France in 1713 and previous to that had completed his college and philosophy studies, probably in Canada. By 1715 he was teaching and was ordained a priest in 1725. In 1728 he was posted to the missions in Louisiana. Gervais Baudoin
Gervais Baudoin (3 August 1686 – 30 June 1752) was born in Quebec, the son of Gervais Baudouin, a surgeon-major of Quebec. He decided to pursue the medical profession and became a surgeon. Baudoin studied at the seminary of Quebec and then studied and practiced surgery. At one point in his career, he attempted to obtain his father's position as surgeon-major of Quebec but was unsuccessful. It appears that he applied himself almost exclusively to his profession after that point.
