Gerry McInerney (Galway Hurler)
Gerry McInerney (born 14 March 1965 in Kinvara) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Kinvara and with the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s. Career McInerney traveled to the USA in 1985 to play hurling for the weekend and ended up staying there for the next five years until returning permanently in 1990. Each year he had traveled back in August to play for Galway in the All-Ireland semi-finals. He became known for his white boots which he purchased in the USA. He won back-to-back All-Ireland winners' medals with Galway in 1987 and 1988. At the age of 42 he was the player-coach for the 2007 Kinvara squad. Galway ( ; ga, Gaillimh, ) is a City status in Ireland, city in the West Region, Ireland, West of Ireland, in the Provinces of Ireland, province of Connacht, which is the county town of County Galway. 1987 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1987 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 101st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began on 24 May 1987 and ended on 6 September 1987. Cork were the defending champions but were defeated by Tipperary in the Munster final. Kerry fielded a team in the provincial championship for the first time since 1978. On 6 September 1987, Galway won the championship following a 1-12 to 0-9 defeat of Kilkenny in the 100th All-Ireland final. This was their third All-Ireland title, their first in seven championship seasons. Tipperary's Pat Fox was the championship's top scorer with 3-45. Connacht Inter-provincial Hurlers
Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). Kinvara or Kinvarra () is a sea port village in the southwest of County Galway, Ireland. It is located in the civil parish of Kinvarradoorus in the north of the barony of Kiltartan. Kinvarra is also an electoral division. A player-coach (also playing coach, captain-coach, or player-manager) is a member of a sports team who simultaneously holds both playing and coaching duties. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887.
