Gerard Russell (diplomat)
Gerard Russell is a former British diplomat in the Middle East, author and lobbyist. Russell is a former British and United Nations diplomat, who spent 14 years representing Britain in the Middle East. Russell speaks Arabic and Dari. In January 2010 he became a Research Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. He later worked for the lobbyist Quiller Consultants where he led efforts funded by the United Arab Emirates, including successfully persuading journalists at the ''Daily Telegraph'' to write negative articles about Qatar's role in funding terrorism. Quiller Consultants is a British lobbying and public relations firm based in Westminster in central London that has close links to the Conservative party. The company was formed in 1998 by John Eisenhammer, a former journalist with ''The Independent'' and Jonathan Hill, a former Whitehall mandarin. Both had previously worked at Bell Pottinger and Hill was later made a life peer by the Conservatives. Dari (, , ), also known as Dari Persian (, ), is the Variety (linguistics), variety of the Persian language spoken in Afghanistan. Mandaeans
Mandaeans ( ar, المندائيون ), also known as Mandaean Sabians ( ) or simply as Sabians ( ), are an ethnoreligious group who are followers of Mandaeism. They believe that John the Baptist was the final and most important prophet. They may have been among the earliest religious groups to practice baptism, as well as among the earliest adherents of Gnosticism, a belief system of which they are the last surviving representatives today. The Mandaeans were originally native speakers of Mandaic, an Eastern Aramaic language, before they nearly all switched to Iraqi Arabic or Persian as their main language.
