Gerard Joseph Xavery
Gerardus Josephus Xavery (27 July 1700, in Antwerp – after 1747), was a Dutch painter. He was the brother of Jan Baptist Xavery, the sculptor, and uncle to the brothers Frans – later his pupil – and Jakob. Franciscus Xaverius (Frans) Xavery (baptized 15 January 1740, in The Hague – c. 1788), was a Dutch painter, and the son of Jan Baptist Xavery. Frans became a member of the Pictura Society at The Hague in 1768, practised for some time in that city, and later in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. He studied first under his uncle Gerard Joseph, and afterwards under Jacob de Wit. His brother Jacob was also a painter. Jacob Xavery
Jacob Xavery (27 April 1736, The Hague – after 1771) was a Dutch painter. Xavery was the son of sculptor Jan Baptist Xavery and pupil of Jakob de Wit. He practised in Amsterdam, Breda, and The Hague, and also spent time in Paris. He occasionally imitated the manner of Nicolaes Berchem in his landscapes and had a similar style to that of his master, Jakob de Wit, in his feigned bas reliefs. Xavery also painted portraits of several distinguished persons, among them Gerrit Braamcamp and sculptor Charles Cressent. He died towards the end of the 18th century. His ''Vase of Fruit and a Vine Branch'' is displayed in South Kensington Museum. The Confrerie Pictura was a more or less academic club of artists founded in 1656 in The Hague (the Netherlands) by local art painters, who were unsatisfied by the Guild of Saint Luke there. History The guild of St. Luke in the Hague existed already in the 15th century and like most large Dutch cities, it catered not just to painters, but were united also with glaziers, engravers, sculptors, goldsmiths, printers and book sellers. In those days guilds were represented in churches with their own altars, and in the case of the painters' guild, they were sponsored by the church, and sometimes even ensured an income for church fathers through donations to the St. Luke's altar. After the Protestant Reformation, this all changed, and the churches were no longer a part of guild life.
