Geraldine McMillian
Geraldine McMillian is an American soprano who has had an active career in concerts and operas since the mid-1980s. Career After graduating from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Eleanor Steber, McMillian made her professional opera debut in 1986 at the Houston Grand Opera as Annie in George Gershwin's ''Porgy and Bess''. She repeated the role for her debut with the San Francisco Opera the following year, and in 1988 portrayed Clara in that opera for her debut with the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee. In 1989 she sang a program of works by Richard Strauss with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. McMillian's first major success was her debut performance at the New York City Opera (NYCO) in 1990 as Mimi in Giacomo Puccini's ''La bohème''. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on the 1784 stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, '' La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro'' ("The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro"). It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, foiling the efforts of their philandering employer Count Almaviva to seduce Susanna and teaching him a lesson in fidelity. Opera Omaha is a major regional opera company in Omaha, Nebraska. Founded in 1958, the professional company is widely known for the International Fall Festival events it held in the 1980s and 1990s, which garnered international attention and served as the U.S. and world premieres for a number of notable works. Opera Colorado is an opera company located in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1981, it presents an annual season of three to four fully staged productions. Its primary performance venue is the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. History The company was founded in 1981 (with its first performances in 1983) by husband and wife team Nathaniel Merrill and Louise Sherman, who came to Denver from long careers at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (; 9 or 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian composer best known for his operas. He was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, receiving a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini, whose works significantly influenced him. ''Tosca'' is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa.
