Geraldine Hemus
Geraldine Marian Hemus (11 November 1876 – 11 January 1969) was a New Zealand lawyer. She was the third woman in New Zealand to be admitted to the bar to practise law as a barrister and solicitor. Hemus also held positions with the National Council of Women of New Zealand and was a prominent member of the Auckland Theosophical Society. Early life Hemus was born in Auckland on 11 November 1876, to Charles Hemus (a photographer) and Gertrude Evangeline Edger (a sister of Kate Edger, the first woman New Zealand to earn a university degree in New Zealand). Both her parents were immigrants from England and highly involved in theosophy. Their family home in Ponsonby was a centre for discussion and educational groups. Theosophy is a religion established in the United States during the late 19th century. Kate Edger
Kate Milligan Evans (née Edger, 6 January 1857 – 6 May 1935) was the first woman in New Zealand to gain a university degree, and possibly the second in the British Empire to do so. Early life Edger was born in 1857 at Abingdon, Berkshire, England. Her father was the Rev. Samuel Edger, a Christian minister. Her family emigrated from England to New Zealand in 1862. They lived in Albertland and then in Auckland. Education Edger and her sisters received much of their early education from their father who was a university graduate. As there was no higher education for girls at the time, but she showed academic promise, she was placed in the top class of the Auckland College and Grammar School. Ponsonby is an inner-city suburb of Auckland located 2 km west of the Auckland CBD. The suburb is oriented along a ridge running north–south, which is followed by the main street of the suburb, Ponsonby Road. A predominantly upper-middle class residential suburb, Ponsonby today is also known in Auckland for its dining and shopping establishments – many restaurants, cafes, art gallery, art galleries, up-market shops and nightclubs are located along Ponsonby Road.
