Gerald Van Woerkom
Gerald Van Woerkom was a Republican member of both houses of the Michigan Legislature between 1999 and 2010. Born April 3, 1947 in Grand Haven, Van Woerkom received his bachelor's degree in world history from Calvin College and a master's degree in education from the University of Michigan. He was involved in various capacities in Christian schools in Michigan for nearly 30 years, including as the superintendent of Muskegon Christian Schools from 1994 through 1997. He was also involved in the Muskegon County Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Muskegon Lake Public Advisory Committee, and the White Lake Public Advisory Committee. Van Woerkom was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1998 and served two terms. Michigan's 34th Senate District
Michigan's 34th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 34th district was created in 1953, as dictated by the 1908 Michigan Constitution. The previous 1850 constitution only allowed for 32 senate districts. It has been represented by Republican Jon Bumstead since 2019, succeeding fellow Republican Goeff Hansen. Geography District 34 encompasses all of Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Mecosta, and Osceola counties, as well as parts of Bay, Clinton, Lake, Midland, and Saginaw counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 34, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, was based in Muskegon, covered all of Muskegon County as well as nearby Newaygo and Oceana Counties. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats. Michigan House Of Representatives
The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. There are 110 members, each of whom is elected from constituencies having approximately 77,000 to 91,000 residents, based on population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Its composition, powers and duties are established in Article IV of the Michigan Constitution. Members are elected in even-numbered years and take office at 12 p.m. (EST) on January 1 following the November general election. Joel Gougeon
Joel Gougeon (born January 13, 1943) was a Republican member of the Michigan Senate from 1993-2002 representing the 34th district (then Ogemaw, Arenac, Bay, Tuscola, and Huron counties). He previously served as a member of the Bay County Board of Commissioners. Gougeon received a mechanical engineering degree in 1966 from what was then the General Motors Institute by co-oping at the Saginaw Malleable Iron Foundry. After five years in the Air Force, Gougeon and his brothers formed Gougeon Brothers, Inc., which manufactured sailboats, epoxy adhesives, and wind energy blades. The methods first developed by the Gougeon brothers using West System epoxy have become the standard techniques taught in colleges the world over for building boats using epoxy. He was also a member of a number of civic organizations, including as a past president of the Bay City Lions Club and as a founder of the Bay County Crime Stoppers.
