Carrig & Riverstown GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located near Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Located outside Birr, County Offaly, Carrig & Riverstown GAA Club is geographically located in County Tipperary. The club was founded in 1933 and had always been affiliated to the Offaly County Board. The club has spent most of its existence operating in the junior grade, winning their first two Offaly JHC titles in 1946 and 1955. This was followed by an Offaly IHC title in 1958 and senior status for the first time. Further JHC titles were won in 1971, 1979 and 1995 before winning two more IHC titles in 1996 and 2023. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. Brendan Murtagh
Brendan Murtagh (born 1983) is an Irish hurler. His league and championship career with the Westmeath senior team spanned twenty seasons from 2001 until 2020. Born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Murtagh was educated at Mullingar Community College and later at Sligo Institute of Technology. He first played competitive hurling at juvenile and underage levels with Clonkill, before later joining the senior team. The highlight of Murtagh's club career was the winning of an All-Ireland medal in the intermediate grade in 2008. He also won a Leinster medal and six senior county championship medals. As a Gaelic footballer, Murtagh won two senior county championship medals with the Downs club. Murtagh made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he was selected for the Westmeath minor team. Structure The National Hurling League saw a major restructuring of the usual four divisions with the teams divided more equitably into a five-tier structure. Diarmuid Lyng
Diarmuid Lyng (born 1981 in Wexford, Ireland) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling and Gaelic football with his local club St Martin's and was a member of the Wexford senior inter-county hurling team from 2004 to 2013. His nickname "Gizzy" was acquired in his childhood and is a reference to the character Gizmo from the movie Gremlins. A graduate of Froebel College of Education, Lyng is a primary school teacher. Playing career Club Lyng plays both hurling and Gaelic football with his local club St Martin's in Piercestown and has experienced much success. In 1999 Lyng was still a member of the clubs minor team when he made his senior debut as a seventeen-year-old. He was a non-playing substitute when St Martin's defeated Rathnure by two points to win their very first county championship.
