George Vari Engineering And Computing Centre
The George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre is a 4-story building that is part of Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Initially, in 2000, Santiago Calatrava proposed that the engineering building be 33 floors. The cost was $90 million and $25 million over the university's budget. Completed in 2004 by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, the state-of-the-art building cost $45 million to complete. The building houses the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science Dean's Office, the First Year Engineering Office and the offices for the Departments of Aerospace Engineering; Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering; Computer Science; and Mathematics. George Vari
George William Vari, (August 14, 1923 – December 9, 2010) was a Canadians, Canadian real estate developer and philanthropist. Trained as a civil engineer and economist in Hungary, he immigrated to Canada after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. George Vari was born in Szepes County, Hungary, to lawyer Istvan Vari and Ida Vari in 1923. During World War II, George was able to flee to Switzerland in 1940, and he studied in Lausanne. After the war, he returned to Hungary and attended the University of Szeged and Budapest Technical University. Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Vari left Hungary in 1957 and settled in Montreal. Vari had met Helen de Fabinyi in Hungary in 1950, and they were later married in Montreal in 1967. Vari made his fortune in international real estate development, which included building the Tour Montparnasse in Paris, six of the pavilions at Expo 1967 in Montreal, and Moscow's Cosmos Hotel. Helen Vari
Helen Ilona Vari ( de Fabinyi; March 31, 1931 – March 16, 2023) was a Canadian philanthropist. Biography Vari was born Helen Ilona de Fabinyi in Spišská Nová Ves on March 31, 1931, and was raised in Hungary. She was educated in Hungary and Austria. She met George Vari in 1950. She fled Hungary in 1957 following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. She and George were married in Montreal in 1967. In 1984, Vari and her husband founded the George and Helen Vari Foundation to promote education in Canada and cultural and educational exchange. The foundation gave philanthropic gifts to numerous educational institutions including the University of Toronto, York University, Toronto Metropolitan University and Ontario Tech University.
