George Thomas Kenyon
George Thomas Kenyon (28 December 1840 – 26 January 1908) was a British Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1885 and 1906. Kenyon was born in London, the second son of Lloyd Kenyon, 3rd Baron Kenyon and his wife Hon. Georgina de Grey, daughter of Thomas de Grey, 4th Baron Walsingham. He was educated at Harrow School and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated as Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1864 and Master (MA) in 1870.Article by J.E. Lloyd, revised by H.C.G. Matthew. He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1869. He entered the North Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry as a cornet in 1865, was lieutenant when the regiment amalgamated in the unified Shropshire Yeomanry regiment in 1872, was promoted captain in 1873, and resigned in 1879. Hanmer, Wales
Hanmer is a village and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. At the 2001 Census the population of the Hanmer community area, which includes Hanmer village itself, Horseman's Green, Halghton and Arowry along with a number of small hamlets, was recorded at 726, reducing to 665 at the 2011 Census. History The village of Hanmer lies at the northern end of Hanmer Mere, part of the 'Shropshire lake district' of meres which was formed during the last ice-age. By the time of the Roman invasion (47 AD), the area was part of the lands occupied by the Cornovii, one of the tribes of ancient Britain who had their principal settlement at the Wrekin. Penley ( cy, Llannerch Banna) is a village in the County Borough of Wrexham, in Wales close to the border with Shropshire, England, and had a population of 606 as of the 2011 census. The village was, until 1974, in an exclave of the ancient county of Flintshire known as ''Maelor Saesneg''. (English: "English-speaking Maelor"), sometimes called "''Flintshire Detached''", which was administered from Overton-on-Dee. Between 1974 and 1996, Penley was in the short-lived county of Clwyd. Penley lies on the path of the long-distance walk, the ''Maelor Way''. Church and parish history Penley Church was originally built in 1538. The timber structure was replaced by a brick one in 1793. This was demolished in 1893, and the current church was completed in 1899; it was consecrated in 1902, and dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Denbighshire County Cricket Club was a county cricket club based in the historic Welsh county of Denbighshire, that played in the Minor Counties Championship for five seasons from 1930 to 1935 (missing the 1932 season). The side was unsuccessful, and in its final season it lost each of its eight matches, six of them by an innings. It finished bottom of the championship table in each of its seasons. After the 1935 season, the side disbanded. Although it considered forming a Gentlemen of Denbighshire team for eventual readmission to the Minor Counties (see ''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', 1936 edition), that did not happen. Wrexham And Ellesmere Railway
The Wrexham and Ellesmere Railway was a railway line that ran from Wrexham in North Wales, to Ellesmere in Shropshire, England. The line opened in 1895 and closed in 1962, except for a residual goods service which itself closed in 1981. The line had been conceived as part of a through route to by-pass the dominant Great Western Railway route, but this destiny was never realised, and the line was simply a rural branch. It was worked by the Cambrian Railways effectively as part of that company's system. The Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889 (52 & 53 Vict c 40) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Background Elementary education had been compulsory in Wales, as in the rest of the United Kingdom, since the introduction of the Education Act in 1870. The Act required that all children attended school until the age of ten. As a result of that Act, school boards had been created to provide primary level education for all children. Following the success of the 1870 Act, reformers and educationists in Wales turned their attention to the next level of education. 1900 United Kingdom General Election
The 1900 United Kingdom general election was held between 26 September and 24 October 1900, following the dissolution of Parliament on 25 September. Also referred to as the Khaki Election (the first of several elections to bear this sobriquet), it was held at a time when it was widely believed that the Second Boer War had effectively been won (though in fact it was to continue for another two years). The Conservative Party, led by Lord Salisbury with their Liberal Unionist allies, secured a large majority of 134 seats, despite securing only 5.6% more votes than Henry Campbell-Bannerman's Liberals. This was largely owing to the Conservatives winning 163 seats that were uncontested by others. The Labour Representation Committee, later to become the Labour Party, participated in a general election for the first time.
