George Serhan
George Serhan (born 30 June 1954) is an Australian professional golfer. Serhan was a full-time pro on the PGA Tour of Australasia from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s. Although he won a number of minor tournaments in the Australasian region he is best remembered for winning his home state's open, the New South Wales Open, in 1980. It was his only official win on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Early life Serhan is from Muswellbrook, New South Wales. He is of Lebanese descent. In 1971, in an effort to be a professional golfer, Serhan moved to Sydney. He trained at the nearby Roseville Golf Club. Professional career Serhan played his first pro tournament at the 1973 Forbes tournament. He started playing the Australian circuit full-time during 1974–75 season. Muswellbrook, New South Wales
Muswellbrook ( ) is a town in the Upper Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, about north of Sydney and north-west of Newcastle. Geologically, Muswellbrook is situated in the northern parts of the Sydney basin, bordering the New England region. The Illawarra Open was a professional golf tournament played in the Illawarra area of New South Wales, Australia. It was played between 1978 and 1981. 1978 and 1979 events had prize money of A$20,000. The 1981 event was played over 36 holes with reduced prize money of A$10,000 and was not a PGA Tour of Australia The PGA Tour of Australasia, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia, is a professional golf tour for men, owned and operated by the PGA of Australia. Queensland PGA Championship
The Queensland PGA Championship is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The tournament is currently held at Nudgee Golf Club in Nudgee. History The event was founded as the Queensland Professional Championship in 1926. The inaugural championship was played at Brisbane Golf Club in late November with 12 professionals competing. There was a 36-hole stroke-play stage with the leading 4 qualifying for the match-play. The 36-hole semi-finals were played the following day with the 36-hole final on the third day. Arthur Spence, the Royal Queensland professional, beat Jack Quarton, the Toowoomba professional, in the final. In 1927 the number of qualifiers was increased to 8, with the quarter and semi-finals played over 18 holes on the second day. Terry Gale
Terry R. Gale (born 7 June 1946) is an Australian professional golfer. Professional career Gale had a successful amateur career before turning professional at a relatively advanced age in 1976. From the mid-1970s to the early 1990s he won regularly on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Japan Golf Tour, and the Asia Golf Circuit. Once he turned 50, he joined the European Seniors Tour, where he won seven tournaments. His best season on that tour was 2003, when he finished third on the Order of Merit. He also played on the Japanese Seniors Tour. Personal life Gale originally worked as a sheep farmer. Off the course, Gale was the second Chairman of the PGA Tour of Australasia. Resch's Pilsner Tweed Classic
The Gold Coast Classic was a professional golf tournament played at Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club in northern New South Wales, Australia. It was held from 1978 to 1983. From 1979 to 1983 it was sponsored by Tooth and Co., a beer brewery, initially under their name but from 1982 under the name Resch's Resch's is a brand of beer produced by Carlton and United Breweries, available in New South Wales, Australia. It was also the name of the Sydney brewing company who produced the beer brand and were based in Redfern until taken over by Tooth ... Pilsner. There was a playoff in the inaugural event. Queensland Open (golf)
The Queensland Open is a golf tournament held in Queensland, Australia as part of the PGA Tour of Australasia. It was founded in 1925. The event was not held from 2008 to 2012 but returned as a PGA Tour of Australasia event in 2013. Trophy The winner receives the T. B. Hunter Cup. The trophy was donated by Thomas Brown Hunter in 1939, the winner to retain it for a year and receive a replica. The trophy was inscribed with the name of the previous winners. Hunter was secretary of Brisbane Golf Club from 1910 to 1938 and also secretary of the Queensland Golf Association. He won the Queensland Amateur Championship in 1913. Ian Stanley (golfer)
Ian Stanley (14 November 1948 – 29 July 2018) was an Australian professional golfer. Stanley was born in Melbourne. He started playing at the age of 14 at the old Amstel Golf Club which backed onto his parents' home in Ian Grove, Mount Waverley. In 1966, he won both the Club Championship and Junior Championship and, later in the same year, won the Victorian School Boys at Huntingdale Golf Club. As Amstel was moving to a new site in Cranbourne, Stanley was asked to join Huntingdale, where he honed his game under the watchful eye of club professional Geoff Flanagan. In 1967, he won the Victorian Junior Championship at Huntingdale and in 1969, he went on to win both the Junior and Senior Club Championships (also played at Huntingdale). Robert J. Shaw (born 24 December 1944) is an Australian professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s. Shaw was born in Sydney. He turned professional in 1965. Shaw played in Europe in 1968, winning the Spanish Open. Later in the year he successfully qualified for the PGA Tour at 1968 APG Tour Qualifying School. His best finishes in PGA Tour events were a T-2 at both the 1969 Tallahassee Open and the 1971 Greater Milwaukee Open plus a win at the 1972 Tallahassee Open with a 15-under-par 273 by two strokes over Leonard Thompson. 1980 World Cup (men's Golf)
The 1980 World Cup took place 11–14 December 1980 at the El Rincon Golf Club in Bogotá, Colombia. It was the 28th World Cup event. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 45 teams. Each team consisted of two players from a country. 50 countries originally entered the four-day competition, but Jamaica, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic all withdrew shortly before the start. The team from the Netherlands quit the tournament when one of its players became ill. The combined score of each team determined the team results. A notable player withdrawal, before the tournament begun, was Seve Ballesteros, who was selected to the Spanish team and took part in the Colombian Open on a nearby course the week before, but, reportedly due to his demand of appearance money being denied, didn't play in the World Cup. Sam Torrance
Samuel Robert Torrance (born 24 August 1953) is a Scottish professional golfer and sports commentator. He was one of the leading players on the European Tour from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s, with 21 Tour wins. Torrance was a member of European Ryder Cup teams on eight occasions consecutively; on Cup-winning teams four times. He was also part of the winning Scotland team at the 1995 Dunhill Cup. He was the winning non-playing captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2002. Torrance was honoured with the MBE (1996) and OBE (2003), for his outstanding contributions to golf.
