George Perlegos
George Perlegos (born 1950) is a Greek-American computer scientist and engineer, best known for pioneering the use of EEPROM and founding Atmel. Early life and education Perlegos was born in 1950 to parents Eleni and Pete Perlegos in Arcadia (regional unit), Arcadia, Greece. Perlegos and his two brothers came to the United States in 1962 and he began working as a grape farmer. He finished high school in Lodi, California, Lodi, California, and graduated from San Jose State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering. He later completed a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in 1975, and from 1975–1978 attended courses there in pursuit of a PhD. Arcadia (regional Unit)
Arcadia ( el, Αρκαδία, ''Arkadía'' ) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Peloponnese. It is in the central and eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. It takes its name from the mythological figure Arcas. In Greek mythology, it was the home of the god Pan. In European Renaissance arts, Arcadia was celebrated as an unspoiled, harmonious wilderness. Flash memory is an electronic non-volatile computer memory storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. The two main types of flash memory, NOR flash and NAND flash, are named for the NOR and NAND logic gates. Both use the same cell design, consisting of floating gate MOSFETs. They differ at the circuit level depending on whether the state of the bit line or word lines is pulled high or low: in NAND flash, the relationship between the bit line and the word lines resembles a NAND gate; in NOR flash, it resembles a NOR gate. EPROM
An EPROM (rarely EROM), or erasable programmable read-only memory, is a type of programmable read-only memory (PROM) chip that retains its data when its power supply is switched off. Computer memory that can retrieve stored data after a power supply has been turned off and back on is called non-volatile. It is an array of floating-gate transistors individually programmed by an electronic device that supplies higher voltages than those normally used in digital circuits. Once programmed, an EPROM can be erased by exposing it to strong ultraviolet light source (such as from a mercury-vapor lamp).
