George N. Turner
George N. Turner was the 23rd Chief of Police for the City of Atlanta, Georgia, US. Turner assumed the position as interim chief on January 4, 2010, having been appointed by newly inaugurated Mayor Kasim Reed due to the resignation of Richard Pennington shortly after the Atlanta Eagle police raid. Turner became the permanent police chief on July 9, 2010. Turner began his career with the Atlanta Police Department in 1981. In December 2016, Turner announced his retirement. Mayor Reed chose Deputy Chief, Erika Shields as his successor. Shields became chief on December 28, 2016. Education Turner was educated in the Atlanta public school system. Atlanta Chief Of Police
There have been many police chiefs of the Atlanta Police Department in the history of Atlanta, Georgia United States. The city shifted from a rural, Marshal/Deputy Marshal model in 1873. The current interim police chief is Darin Schierbaum. The city is in the process of conducting a nationwide search for a permanent chief. Schierbaum succeeded former police chief Rodney N. Bryant. Bryant took the helm after former chief Erika Shields resigned following the killing of Rayshard Brooks. Bryant served as interim police chief until the city named him as chief in June of 2020. Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is a school district based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is run by the Atlanta Board of Education with superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. Columbus State University
Columbus State University is a public university in Columbus, Georgia. Founded as Columbus College in 1958, the university was established and is administered by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. History The university was first called Columbus College when it opened as a junior college in a hosiery mill in 1958. The college was staffed by fifteen faculty and staff and almost three hundred students attended courses in the first year. Columbus College relocated to the midtown area in 1963, building a campus defined by modern architecture on what was previously a dairy farm. Here is a list of mayors of Atlanta, Georgia. The mayor is the highest elected official in Atlanta. Since its incorporation in 1847, the city has had 61 mayors. The current mayor is Andre Dickens who was elected in the 2021 election and took office in January, 2022. The term of office was one year until Cicero C. Hammock's second term (1875–77), when a new city charter changed it to two years. The term was changed to four years in 1929, giving Isaac N. Ragsdale the modern stay in office. Though a political party is listed where known, the mayoral election is officially non-partisan, so candidates do not ''represent'' their party when elected. Atlanta Eagle Police Raid
The Atlanta Eagle police raid was a police raid targeting the Atlanta Eagle, a gay bar in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The raid occurred on September 10, 2009, due to anonymous tips alleging that illegal drug use and sex was occurring at the bar. Several dozen officers were involved in the raid, including members of the Atlanta Police Department's vice squad and the "Red Dog Unit", a SWAT-like unit typically used in high drug use areas. None of the 62 bar patrons that night were arrested, although eight employees were. Seven of these employees were either found not guilty or had charges dropped against them, while one was not present at the trials and had a bench warrant issued against him. During the raid, bar patrons and employees were subject to anti-gay slurs, derogatory language, and both threats of and actual physical violence. In law, a person is acting in a position if they are not serving in the position on a permanent basis.
