George Medley
George Medley (1720–1796) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1768 and 1790. Medley was the son of Thomas Medley of Buxted Place and his wife Annabella Dashwood, daughter of Sir Samuel Dashwood MP former Lord Mayor of London and was born on 6 August. 1720. He is reported to be a descendant of Margaret Wotton, Marchioness of Dorset (1485 – 6 October 1535) through his paternal line. He is reported a descendant of Arthur Plantagenet, 1st Viscount Lisle, KG (died 3 March 1542) through his paternal line. He became a wine merchant in Portugal, where he amassed an immense property. He succeeded his brother in 1751. In 1755 he lost a part of his property as a result of the Lisbon earthquake. He subsequently returned to England and settled as a country gentleman in Sussex. House Of Commons
The House of Commons is the name for the elected lower house of the bicameral parliaments of the United Kingdom and Canada. In both of these countries, the Commons holds much more legislative power than the nominally upper house of parliament. The leader of the majority party in the House of Commons by convention becomes the prime minister. Other parliaments have also had a lower house called a "House of Commons". History and naming The House of Commons of the Kingdom of England evolved from an undivided parliament to serve as the voice of the tax-paying subjects of the counties and of the boroughs. Knights of the shire, elected from each county, were usually landowners, while the borough members were often from the merchant classes. William Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage
William Hall Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage (6 January 1717/18 – 11 October 1791) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1744 and 1780 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Gage. He was equerry to the Prince of Wales. William Hall Gage was born to Thomas Gage and his wife Benedicta Maria Theresa Hall on 6 January 1717/18 and christened 31 January 1717/18 at Westminster St James, Middlesex. He was educated at Westminster School. From 1744 Gage served five terms as Member of Parliament representing the Seaford borough of Sussex. As eldest son, he succeeded his father to the title Viscount Gage on 21 December 1754. He served as Paymaster of Pensions from 1755 through 1763 and later from 1765 until 1782 when Parliament dissolved the office. William Hamilton Nisbet
William Hamilton Nisbet (1747 – 17 July 1822) was a British politician. He was the eldest son of William Nisbet of Archerfield House, Dirleton and his wife Mary, the daughter and heiress of Alexander Hamilton of Pencaitland, Haddington and Dechmont Linlithgow, and also the heiress of James, 5th Lord Belhaven to the estates of Biel and Presmennan. He was educated at Eton School. He served in the British Army, initially as a cornet and then as sub-lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards, retiring in 1774. He was very well to do from his own and his wife's inheritances and entered Parliament in 1777 as the member for Haddingtonshire, sitting until 1780. Ten years later he entered Parliament again as the MP for East Grinstead (1790–96) and Newport, Isle of Wight (1796-1800). On 31 January 1777, he married Mary Manners, daughter of Lord Robert Manners. Nathaniel Dance-Holland
Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, 1st Baronet (8 May 1735 – 15 October 1811) was an English portrait painter and later a politician. Early life The third son of architect George Dance the Elder, Dance (he added the 'Holland' suffix later in life) studied art under Francis Hayman, and like many contemporaries also studied in Italy. There he met Angelica Kauffman, and painted several historic and classical paintings. Career On his return to England, he became a successful portrait painter. With Hayman and his architect brother George Dance the Younger, he was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768. He was commissioned to paint King George III and his queen, plus Captain James Cook and actor David Garrick. Richard Ford (East Grinstead MP)
Sir Richard Ford (1758 – 3 May 1806) was an English politician who sat in the house of Commons from 1789 to 1791. Ford was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of East Grinstead in Sussex at an unopposed by-election in February 1789. He held that seat until the general election in 1790, when he was returned unopposed for the borough of Appleby in Westmorland.Stooks Smith, page 560 He served less than a year as an MP for Appleby, until he resigned from the Commons in early 1791 by accepting the post of Steward of East Hendred. Robert Cuninghame, 1st Baron Rossmore
General Robert Cuninghame, 1st Baron Rossmore, PC (Ire) (18 April 1726 – 6 August 1801) was an Irish British Army officer and politician. Military career Cuninghame was the son of Colonel David Cuninghame and his wife Margaret Callander of Craigforth. He was a General in the Army who fought at an early age at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 with the 14th Foot. He later served as Commander-in-Chief of Ireland from 1793 to 1796. Cuninghame sat as a Member of the Irish House of Commons for Tulsk from 1751 to 1761, for Armagh Borough from 1761 to 1768 and for Monaghan Borough from 1768 to 1796. Between 1788 and 1789 he represented East Grinstead in the British House of Commons. John Irwin (MP)
General Sir John Irwin KB (1727/28 – May 1788) was an Irish soldier who served in the British Army. Career Educated in Ireland, Irwin was commissioned into the 5th Regiment of Foot in 1736. He served in an attack on the French coast in 1758 and then fought under Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick in Germany in 1760. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for East Grinstead from 1762 to 1783, Governor of Gibraltar from 1765 to 1767, member of the Irish privy council, and as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland from 1775 to 1782. Losing the last of these posts on the fall of Lord North's administration in March 1782, he moved back into his house in Piccadilly and his place in parliament, rising to full General and retiring from parliament in 1783.
