George Lawton (footballer, Born 1862)
George Lawton (4 August 1862 – 1930) was an English association football, footballer who played in the English Football League, Football League for Stoke City F.C., Stoke. Career George Lawton joined Stoke St Peter's in 1884. In July 1885, he signed for Stoke City F.C., Stoke, playing in both FA Cup matches in the 1885–86 Stoke F.C. season, 1885–86 season as Stoke lost to Crewe Alexandra F.C., Crewe Alexandra in a Replay (sports), replay. In January 1886 he joined Potteries derby, nearby Port Vale F.C., Burslem Port Vale, where he scored three times in thirteen exhibition game, friendlies, before returning to Stoke in the May of that year. Stoke' major achievement from 1886 to 1888 was reaching the 1887–88 FA Cup Fifth Round. Stoke-upon-Trent
Stoke-upon-Trent, commonly called Stoke is one of the six towns that along with Hanley, Burslem, Fenton, Longton and Tunstall form the city of Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire, England. The town was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1874. In 1910 it became one of the six towns that federated to become the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent and later the City of Stoke-on-Trent. Since federation in 1910 it has the seat of the city's council, though Stoke-on-Trent's city centre is usually regarded as being the nearby town of Hanley which, since federation, has been the most commercially important of the six towns. Stoney Lane
Stoney Lane was a football ground in West Bromwich, England. It was the home ground of West Bromwich Albion from 1885 until 1900. History West Bromwich Albion moved to Stoney Lane in 1885 from their Four Acres ground in 1885. Victoria Ground
The Victoria Ground was the home ground of Stoke City from 1878 until 1997, when the club relocated to the Britannia Stadium after 119 years. At the time of its demolition it was the oldest operational ground in the Football League. History The Victoria Ground had been Stoke City's home since March 1878 and the first match was a friendly against Talke Rangers on 28 March 1878, Stoke won 1–0 before 2,500 spectators. The ground took its name from the nearby Victoria Hotel and was originally an oval shape, built to accommodate a running track and used by the local athletic club. There was an open grass bank at each end, and a small but compact wooden stand on the east side (Boothen Road) capable of housing 1,000 people. Opposite this stand was another bank which could hold 4,000. The ground remained this way for 30 years during which time Stoke had become members of the Football League.
