George Kunkel (actor, Born 1866)
George Kunkel (December 29, 1866 – November 8, 1937) was an American character actorKatchmer, pp. 194–195 and operatic baritone. Simpson, p. 152 Kunkel began his stage career performing alongside his mother, the actress Ada Proctor, in 1887. By 1896 he began appearing with professional light opera companies as a comedian and baritone; touring throughout North America and to Hawaii over the next six years. From 1901 to 1905 he was active as both an opera singer and an actor in dramatic and comedic plays in Australia and New Zealand. He was a member of the San Francisco Opera Company from 1905 to 1908, and briefly returned to the company in 1909. He was a member of the Aborn Opera Company in 1908 and 1911. In 1911–1912 he starred in numerous plays at the Orpheum Theatre in Cincinnati. George Kunkel (March 10, 1893 – May 18, 1965) was an American lawyer and politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the Pennsylvania Senate for the Pennsylvania Senate, District 15, 15th district from 1937 to 1941. Early life and education Kunkel was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and went to the public schools. He graduated from the Harrisburg Academy and Franklin & Marshall College in 1915. He attended law school at Harvard Law School from 1915 to 1917. He attended Officer's Training Camp at Fort Niagara in New York (state), New York and was commissioned second lieutenant in September 1917. He was sent to Fort George G. Meade, Camp Meade in Maryland and assigned to the 30th Machine Gun Battalion. He spent nine months at Camp Meade then in July 1918 was assigned to the 79th Infantry Division (United States), 79th Infantry Division of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). The minstrel show, also called minstrelsy, was an American form of racist theatrical entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by mostly white people wearing blackface make-up for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and black-only minstrel groups that formed and toured. La Mascotte
''La mascotte'' (''The Mascot'') is a three-act opéra comique with music by Edmond Audran and words by Alfred Duru and Henri Chivot. The story concerns a farm girl who is a "mascotte": someone with the mystic power to bring good luck to all around her, so long as she remains a virgin. The opera opened at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens, Paris, on 28 December 1880, and had an initial run of 301 performances. Productions followed in other continental European countries, the Americas, Britain and Australia. The title of the piece introduced the word "mascotte" into standard French usage, "mascot" into English, and other variants of it into several more languages. Background and first performance In 1880 "mascotte" was a fairly new French slang word derived from the Provençal language, Provençal term ''mascoto'', meaning "spell" or "bewitchment". Achille Edmond Audran (12 April 184017 August 1901) was a French composer best known for several internationally successful comic operas and operettas. After beginning his career in Marseille as an organist, Audran composed religious music and began to write works for the stage in the 1860s and 1870s. Among these, '' Le grand mogol'' (1877) was the most popular and was later revived in Paris, London and New York. In 1879 he moved to Paris, where some of his pieces achieved considerable success both in France and abroad, including ''Les noces d'Olivette'' (1879), ''La mascotte'' (1880), ''Gillette de Narbonne'' (1882), ''La cigale et la fourmi'' (1886), '' Miss Helyett'' (1890) and ''La poupée'' (1896). Most of his works are now neglected, but ''La mascotte'' has been revived occasionally and has been recorded for the gramophone. Olympia is the capital of the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat and largest city of Thurston County. Carl Millöcker
Carl (or Karl) Joseph Millöcker ( – ), was an Austrian composer of operettas and a conductor. __NOTOC__ He was born in Vienna, where he studied the flute at the Vienna Conservatory. While holding various conducting posts in the city, he began to compose operettas. The first was ''Der tote Gast'', an operetta in one act, premiered in 1865 with libretto by Ludwig Harisch, after the novel by Heinrich Zschokke. The international success of '' Der Bettelstudent'' enabled him to retire from conducting. However, he never achieved a comparable success afterward. Carl Millöcker died in Baden bei Wien; on 31 December 1899. He was buried in an honorary grave in Vienna's Zentralfriedhof cemetery (group 32, A35). ''Fra Diavolo, ou L'hôtellerie de Terracine'' (''Fra Diavolo, or The Inn of Terracina'') is an opéra comique in three acts by the French composer Daniel Auber, from a libretto by Auber's regular collaborator Eugène Scribe. It is loosely based on the life of the Itrani guerrilla leader Michele Pezza, active in southern Italy in the period 1800-1806, who went under the name of Fra Diavolo ("Brother Devil"). The opera was first performed by the Opéra-Comique at the Salle Ventadour in Paris on 28 January 1830 and an Italian version was prepared by Auber and Scribe for performance in London in 1857. This contained new recitatives and arias, as well as expanding the roles of Fra Diavolo's accomplices. The opera was Auber's greatest success, one of the most popular works of the 19th century and was in the standard repertory in its original French as well as German and Italian versions.
