George Hay, 7th Earl Of Erroll
George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll ( – 30 January 1573) was a Scottish nobleman and politician. Biography Hay was the grandson of William Hay, 3rd Earl of Erroll; George's father Thomas was killed alongside his older brother, William Hay, 4th Earl of Erroll, at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. After his cousin William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll died in 1541 leaving only a young daughter, George succeeded to the earldom and with it the family title of Lord High Constable of Scotland. The sixth earl, who inherited the earldom as a toddler, died under the age of 21; by the time George inherited the titles, the barony had been in the possession of the crown for 19 years, four months. The Peerage of Scotland allows titles to descend along the female lines; Jean Hay, the young daughter of the sixth earl of Erroll, could have inherited the earldom as Countess of Erroll. George Hay, 7th Marquess of Tweeddale DL (1753 – 9 August 1804) was a Scottish peer. Early life Hay was born at Newhall in East Lothian, Scotland. He was the son of John Hay (d. 1765) and Dorothy ( Hayhurst) Hay (d. 1808). His siblings included William Hay (who married Lady Catherine Hay, a daughter of the 4th Marquess of Tweeddale), Edward Hay-Mackenzie of Newhall (who married Hon. Maria Murray-Mackenzie, a daughter of the 6th Lord Elibank), Dorothea Hay (who married James Hay), and Margaret Hay (who married Allan Macdougall of Gallanach). George Hay (artist)
George H. Hay RSA RSW (1831–1912) was a Scottish artist. His narrative paintings are often inspired by the works of Sir Walter Scott. In 1878 he founded the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours. Life Hay was born at Prospect Bank House in Leith (Edinburgh's harbour town) in 1831. He studied art under Robert Scott Lauder alongside William McTaggart, William Quiller Orchardson and Hugh Cameron. The latter became a close friend and they shared a studio at 12 Queen Street, Edinburgh from 1880. In 1865 he was living at 16 Picardy Place at the head of Leith Walk. He became an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1869 and a full member in 1876. He was Secretary to the RSA from 1881 to 1907. George Hay, Earl Of Gifford
George Hay, Earl of Gifford (26 April 1822 – 22 December 1862) was a British Liberal Party politician. Lord Gifford was born at Yester House, the eldest son of the 8th Marquess of Tweeddale. He was educated at Trinity College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he was president of the University Pitt Club. In 1850, he was a Captain in the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry and became Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for War ( The Duke of Newcastle) in 1854. A year later, he entered Parliament as MP for Totnes (a seat he held until his death). George Campbell Hay
George Campbell Hay (1915–1984) was a Scottish Symbolist poet and translator, who wrote in Scottish Gaelic, Scots and English. He used the patronymic Deòrsa Mac Iain Dheòrsa. He also wrote poetry in French, Italian and Norwegian, and translated poetry from many languages into Gaelic. Life He was born in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, and brought up in Tarbert, Kintyre and Argyll, where his father, the novelist John MacDougall Hay, had been born. He was educated at Fettes College (which he despised) and the University of Oxford. He served in the British Army in North Africa, Italy and Macedonia during World War II, a region which featured in much of his work and then lived for a long period in Edinburgh where he worked in the National Library of Scotland. He was a Scottish nationalist. His life was difficult, with long periods of hard living, including hospitalisation and homelessness. George Hay was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre forward. Hay joined Third Lanark in 1934 from Junior team Newtongrange Star where he won the Edinburgh & District League in 1932–33, scoring 36 times in all competitions. George Hay (cricketer)
George Hay (28 January 1851 – 4 October 1913) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1875 and 1886. Hay was born at Staveley and became a professional cricketer playing at Manningham, Bradford from 1873 to 1875. His debut season for Derbyshire in the 1875 season saw him play in four county matches, his first, an innings victory over Kent, in which he took a five-wicket haul in the second innings, chosen ahead of the usual bowling pair of William Mycroft and William Hickton. He followed this up with two County matches in the 1876 season. In 1877 Hay was playing professionally for Eland and played just one first-class match for Derbyshire in the 1875 season, scoring 31 not out, the highest score of his career thus far. Hay was back with Derbyshire in the 1878 season, still beating Hickton to the mantle of second-choice bowler, though now he had to shake competition off from John Platts, in the same position. George Hay, 8th Marquess Of Tweeddale
Field Marshal George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale (1 February 1787 – 10 October 1876) was a British soldier and administrator. He served as a staff officer in the Peninsular War under Arthur Wellesley and was with Wellesley at the Second Battle of Porto when they crossed the Douro river and routed Marshal Soult's French troops in Porto. Hay also saw action at the Battle of Bussaco and at the Battle of Vitoria. He later served in the War of 1812 and commanded the 100th Regiment of Foot at the Battle of Chippawa when he was taken prisoner of war. He went on to become governor of Madras and, at the same time, Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army, in which role he restored the discipline of the army, which had been allowed to fall into a relaxed state. George Harley Hay, 14th Earl of Kinnoull (30 March 1902 – 19 March 1938), styled as Viscount Dupplin from 1903 to 1916, was a Scottish peer. His titles were Earl of Kinnoull, Viscount Dupplin and Lord Hay of Kinfauns in the Peerage of Scotland; and Baron Hay of Pedwardine in the Peerage of Great Britain. Early life Erroll was the eldest son of James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll and his second wife, Isabella Carr, the eldest daughter and co-heiress of William Carr of Etal in Northumberland.
