George F. Edmunds (entomologist)
George F. Edmunds Jr. (April 28, 1920–March 4, 2006) was an American entomologist specialising in Mayfly, mayflies. He has been called "the greatest of living North American researchers on Ephemeroptera", and "the first biogeographer of Ephemeroptera". Biography George F. Edmunds Jr. was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to George F. Edmunds and Fern E. Barratt. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1941 but was discharged on medical grounds. He gained his B.S. degree from the University of Utah in 1943, and his M.S. also at Utah in 1946, serving as an instructor in the biology department. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts in 1952, collaborating with Jay Traver, Jay R Traver. He returned to the University of Utah to join its biology faculty, remaining there until he retired in 1989. He continued his work on mayflies until his death in 2006. Mayflies (also known as shadflies or fishflies in Canada and the upper Midwestern United States, as Canadian soldiers in the American Great Lakes region, and as up-winged flies in the United Kingdom) are aquatic insects belonging to the order Ephemeroptera. This order is part of an ancient group of insects termed the Palaeoptera, which also contains dragonflies and damselflies. Over 3,000 species of mayfly are known worldwide, grouped into over 400 genera in 42 families. Mayflies have ancestral traits that were probably present in the first flying insects, such as long tails and wings that do not fold flat over the abdomen. Their immature stages are aquatic fresh water forms (called "naiads" or "nymphs"), whose presence indicates a clean, unpolluted and highly oxygenated aquatic environment. In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. Schistonota is a suborder of mayflies. One of the differences between this suborder and its sister group, Pannota, concerns the degree of fusion of the wing pads in the final-stage nymph; in Schistonota, the degree of fusion along the mesothorax The mesothorax is the middle of the three segments of the thorax of hexapods, and bears the second pair of legs.
