George Edwards Hering
George Edwards Hering (1805 – 18 December 1879) was an English landscape painter. Life Born in London, he was a younger son of a German father who was a bookbinder. At an early age he lost his father. He was a clerk in a bank, but took up art as his profession. In 1829 Hering studied in the art school at Munich, and Lord Erskine sent him with letters of introduction to Venice. After about two years there, he travelled in Italy, and round the Adriatic to Constantinople and Smyrna. On his return to Rome he met John Paget, and with Paget and a Mr. Sanford went on a tour through Hungary and Transylvania among the Carpathian mountains. Hering settled in London, where he practised as a landscape-painter for the rest of his life, paying occasional visits to Italy. He died in London in 1879 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery (West). Samuel Rogers (30 July 1763 – 18 December 1855) was an English poet, during his lifetime one of the most celebrated, although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life, with which he was intimate, and which he used his wealth to support. Charles George Lewis
Charles George Lewis (13 June 1808 – 16 June 1880) was a British printmaker. Life The second son of Frederick Christian Lewis, and brother of John Frederick Lewis, he was born in Enfield, Middlesex. He was instructed in drawing and engraving by his father. Lewis retired in about 1877, and died suddenly from apoplexy at his residence at Felpham, near Bognor, on 16 June 1880. He was buried in Felpham churchyard. Works Lewis had a facility in etching, and in combining line engraving, stipple, and mezzotint. Many of his best-known plates were after the works of Sir Edwin Landseer. The earliest of these was ''Hafed'', published in 1837. Besides these were smaller plates after works of Landseer, most of which had previously been engraved by Thomas Landseer and others. Robert Brandard
Robert Brandard (1805, in Birmingham – 1862, in London) was a British landscape engraver and landscapist. Brandard was the eldest son of Thomas Brandard (d. 1830), engraver and copperplate printer, of Barford Street, Deritend, Birmingham, and his wife, Ann. He went to London in 1824, and entered the studio of Edward Goodall, with whom he remained a year. He engraved some of the subjects for Brockedon's ''Passes of the Alps'', Captain Batty's ''Saxony'', Turner's ''England and Wales'' and ''English Rivers'', and numerous plates for ''The Art Journal'', after Turner, Stanfield, Callcott, Herring, and others. His most important engravings on a large scale were Turner's "Crossing the Brook", "The Snow-storm", and "The Bay of Baiae". He also published two volumes of etchings, chiefly landscapes, after his own designs. The Art Journal
''The Art Journal'' was the most important British 19th-century magazine on art. It was founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves, print publishers, 6 Pall Mall, with the title ''Art Union Monthly Journal'' (or ''The Art Union''), the first issue of 750 copies appearing 15 February 1839. It was published in London but its readership was global in reach. History Hodgson & Graves hired Samuel Carter Hall as editor of ''Art Union Monthly Journal'', assisted by James Dafforne. Hall soon became the principal proprietor, but he was unable to turn a profit on his own. The London publisher George Virtue bought a share of the business in 1848, with Hall remaining as editor, and they renamed the periodical ''The Art Journal'' in 1849. Edward Goodall
Edward Goodall (1795 – 11 April 1870) was a British engraver. He is now best known for his plates after J. M. W. Turner. Life He was born at Leeds on 17 September 1795, and was entirely self-taught. From the age of sixteen he practised both engraving and painting. One of his pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1822 or 1823 attracted the attention of Turner, and he became a landscape engraver. Goodall died at Hampstead Road, London, on 11 April 1870. Works Goodall's major engravings were from the works of Turner. He made the vignettes for Samuel Rogers's ''Italy'' and ''Poems'', and the illustrations to Thomas Campbell's ''Poems''. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel; 26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) was the consort of Queen Victoria from their marriage on 10 February 1840 until his death in 1861. Albert was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld to a family connected to many of Europe's ruling monarchs. British Institution
The British Institution (in full, the British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts in the United Kingdom; founded 1805, disbanded 1867) was a private 19th-century society in London formed to exhibit the works of living and dead artists; it was also known as the Pall Mall Picture Galleries or the British Gallery.
