George Crawford (Canadian Senator)
George Crawford (1793 – July 4, 1870) was a founding member of the Senate of Canada. A Conservative, he was appointed to the Senate on 23 October 1867 by Royal Proclamation, and served in that capacity until his death. He was born in County Leitrim in Ireland in 1793 and came to Upper Canada in the 1820s. After moving to York, (later Toronto), he became a contractor in construction and worked on the Rideau, Cornwall and Beauharnois canals. He served as lieutenant-colonel in the Leeds militia. He was also president of the Brockville and Ottawa Railway. Around 1844, he moved to Brockville. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada representing Brockville in 1851 and 1854. In 1858, he was elected to the Legislative Council, the upper house at that time, and served until 1867, when he became a member of the Senate of Canada. The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. John Willoughby Crawford
John Willoughby Crawford (26 August 1817 – 13 May 1875) served as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Canada from 1873 to 1875. Born in 1817 in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, Ireland, the son of George Crawford, John Crawford came to Upper Canada as a child when his family settled in Brockville. He married Helen Sherwood of York, Upper Canada (Toronto). A lawyer by profession, Crawford served as president of the Royal Canadian Bank and was solicitor for the Grand Trunk Railway. In 1867, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. He also became president of the Toronto and Nipissing Railway in 1868 and also served as a director of the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway. Crawford was member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for East Toronto from 1861 to 1863. James Crawford (October 31, 1816 – November 22, 1878) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Brockville in the 1st Canadian Parliament as a Conservative member. He was born in County Cavan, Ireland in 1816, the oldest son of George Crawford, and came to Upper Canada with his family during the 1820s. Crawford served in Cornwall, Ontario during the Upper Canada Rebellion and was a member of the Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada for several years. He served as lieutenant-colonel in the local militia from 1866 to 1871.
