George Bakhmeteff
George Petrovich Bakhmeteff (Russian: Георгий Петрович Бахметев; 1847 – 29 August 1928) was the last tsarist Russian Ambassador to the United States. He served in office between the years 1911 and 1917. Origins He was a career diplomat who descended from a Tatar noble family which had converted from Islam to the Russian Orthodox faith. Generations of the Bakhmeteff nobility had served under the Czars within the military and civil service. Previous to his service for Russia in Washington he had served as the Russian Ambassador to Japan. Personal life He was married to Mary Beale, the daughter of a popular Washington social couple Ambassador and Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald Beale. John Roll McLean
John Roll McLean (September 17, 1848 – June 9, 1916) was the owner and publisher of ''The Washington Post'' and ''The Cincinnati Enquirer''. McLean was also a one-time partner in the ownership of the Cincinnati Red Stockings (AA), Cincinnati Red Stockings baseball team of the American Association (19th century), American Association and also the Cincinnati Outlaw Reds of the Union Association. He was born in Cincinnati, to Washington McLean (the owner and publisher of ''The Cincinnati Enquirer'') and his wife, Mary. In 1904, he and United States Senate, Senator Stephen Benton Elkins built the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad. McLean, Virginia, which grew up around the railroad, is named for him. Boris Alexandrovich Bakhmeteff (russian: Борис Александрович Бахметев) (also spelled Bakhmetieff or Bakhmetev) (May 14, 1880 – July 21, 1951) was an engineer, businessman, professor of civil engineering at Columbia University and the only ambassador of the Russian Provisional Government to the United States. He was unrelated to his predecessor as ambassador, George Bakhmeteff. Biography He was born on May 14, 1880 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He married Helen on July 22, 1905, in Kineshma, Russia. His wife Helen died in 1921. He became a member of the Menshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1906. His position as ambassador was recognized by the United States government until his resignation in June 1922, when he established the Lion Match Company with other Russian immigrants. Truxtun Beale (March 6, 1856 – June 2, 1936) was an American diplomat. Biography Beale was born in San Francisco to Mary Engle Edwards and Edward Fitzgerald Beale; his siblings were Mary (1852–1925), who married Russian diplomat George Bakhmeteff, and Emily (1854–1912), who married John Roll McLean. He was named for his great-grandfather Commodore Thomas Truxtun. His maternal grandfather was U.S. Representative Samuel Edwards. In 1874 he graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College, and four years later, after studying law at Columbia University, was admitted to the bar. From 1876 to 1877 Beale was secretary to his father the US Ambassador to Austria-Hungary in Vienna. Tejon Ranch Company (), based in Lebec, California, is one of the largest private landowners in California. The company was incorporated in 1936 to organize the ownership of a large tract of land that was consolidated from four Mexican land grants acquired in the 1850s and 1860s by ranch founder Edward Fitzgerald Beale. The company owns over 270,000 acres (1,093 km2) in the southern San Joaquin Valley, Tehachapi Mountains, and Antelope Valley. It is the largest contiguous piece of private property in the state.
