George Augustus Nokes
George Augustus Nokes (1867–1948), often known by his pen-name G.A. Sekon, was the founding editor of '' The Railway Magazine''. Biography Nokes was born on 5 January 1867 at Hammersmith, to Frances Steel and Walter William Samuel Nokes; he was the seventh of their eight children, and their youngest son. Among his brothers were Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes, olympic athlete, soldier and chemist, and Gerald Dacre Nokes, law professor and Indian circuit judge. As a child he was invited to have a ride in the cab of a 2-4-0 locomotive of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway at . Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes MC MA BSc (20 May 1897 – 22 November 1986) was a British schoolteacher, soldier, research scientist and Olympic athlete, who competed in the hammer throw and discus throw. Biography He won the bronze medal in the hammer throw at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Four years later he finished eleventh in the 1928 Olympic hammer throw competition. In 1923 he beat the British hammer throw record, but did so in a demonstration rather than a competition, so his throw did not count for record purposes. He won the gold medal for England in the 1930 British Empire Games in the hammer throw contest and finished fifth in the discus throw event. At the 1934 British Empire Games he won again the gold medal in the hammer throw competition. Nokes was the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) Champion from 1923 to 1926 and placed second in 1921–22 and 1927–28. London, Chatham And Dover Railway
The London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR or LC&DR) was a railway company in south-eastern England created on 1 August 1859, when the East Kent Railway was given parliamentary approval to change its name. Its lines ran through London and northern and eastern Kent to form a significant part of the Greater London commuter network. The company existed until 31 December 1922 when its assets were merged with those of other companies to form the Southern Railway as a result of the grouping determined by the Railways Act 1921. Ironmonger Lane is a narrow one-way street in the City of London running southbound between Gresham Street and Cheapside. Ironmonger Lane has maintained the same name since at least the 12th century when it was recorded as Ismongerelane; "isen" was an old form of the word "iron".
