Geoffrey Salmon
Geoffrey Isidore Hamilton Salmon (14 January 1908 – 29 April 1990), was the chairman of J. Lyons and Co. from 1968 to 1972, and catering advisor to the British Army. Early life Salmon was born on 14 January 1908, and educated at Malvern College and Jesus College, Cambridge. He was the son of Harry Salmon (businessman), Harry Salmon and his wife Lena Gluckstein, the daughter of Isidore Gluckstein. Career Salmon was the chairman of J. Lyons and Co. from 1968 to 1972, and catering advisor to the British Army. Personal life He married Peggy Jacobs (1915–1989), and they had two sons and a daughter. Jesus College, Cambridge
Jesus College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college's full name is The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and the glorious Virgin Saint Radegund, near Cambridge. Its common name comes from the name of its chapel, Jesus Chapel. Jesus College was established in 1496 on the site of the twelfth-century Benedictine nunnery of St Mary and St Radegund by John Alcock, then Bishop of Ely. The cockerel is the symbol of Jesus College, after the surname of its founder. For the 300 years from 1560 to 1860, Jesus College was primarily a training college for Church of England clergy. Harry Salmon (businessman) Henry Salmon JP (1881–1950), was a British businessman, the chairman from 1941 to 1950 of J. Lyons and Co. Early life Harry Salmon was a younger son of Barnett Salmon (1829–1897) who co-founded Salmon & Gluckstein and J. Lyons and Co. Career Salmon was a director of J. Lyons and Co. by 1935, and chairman from 1941 to 1950, when he was succeeded by Major Montague Isidore Gluckstein OBE. Personal life Salmon married Lena Gluckstein, the daughter of Isidore Gluckstein and his wife Rose Cohen. Their children included Geoffrey Salmon and Ruth Margaret Salmon Monbiot, the grandmother of George Monbiot. Isidore Gluckstein
Isidore Gluckstein (1851–1920) was a director of Salmon & Gluckstein tobacco merchants, and one of the founders of J. Lyons and Co., a restaurant chain, food manufacturing, and hotel conglomerate created in 1884 that dominated British mass-catering in the first half of the twentieth century. Isidore Gluckstein was the son of Samuel Gluckstein, the founder of Salmon & Gluckstein. British Jews (often referred to collectively as British Jewry or Anglo-Jewry) are British citizens who identify as Jewish. The number of people who identified as Jews in the United Kingdom rose by just under 4% between 2001 and 2021.
