Geoffrey Davis (doctor)
Geoffrey Lancelot Rutter Davis (1933-2008) was an Australian medical doctor, who rose to prominence in Sydney in the 1970s as a leading provider of contraception and abortion services. He was also the owner for nearly 50 years of The Abbey, Annandale, The Abbey, a 50-room mansion in the Sydney inner suburb of Annandale, New South Wales, Annandale. Early life and education Davis was the only son of Lancelot E. Davis, a radio engineer, and Mavis D. Rutter. He was raised in the Sydney suburb of Strathfield, New South Wales, Strathfield and attended the private Anglican-run Trinity Grammar School for boys, graduating in 1950. From 1951 to 1957, Davis was a student in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney. The Abbey, Annandale
''The Abbey'' is an historic house located at 272 Johnston Street in the Sydney suburb of Annandale, New South Wales, Australia. The house is listed on the (now defunct) Register of the National Estate, the local government register in the New South Wales Heritage Database, and on the non-statutory register of the National Trust of Australia. History ''The Abbey'' was built by John Young, a builder who had migrated from England to Australia. After working for some time as a builder in Melbourne, Young moved to Sydney and continued a successful career. In 1877, he bought land in what is now the suburb of Annandale, where he had visions of creating a garden suburb that would rival exclusive harbourside suburbs like Darling Point. Preterm Foundation
The Preterm Foundation was a pioneering not-for-profit family planning clinic in Sydney Australia from 1974 to 2015, offering women a comprehensive range of counseling, contraception and first-trimester pregnancy termination services. Founding Preterm was the brainchild of Cronulla GP Ian Edwards, who in 1973 with his attorney brother Brian Edwards decided to set up a not-for-profit clinic to make affordable pregnancy termination freely available to women in the Sydney area. The foundation was reportedly financed by loans or gifts from its supporters. Bridget Gilling, its president and an advocate of abortion law reform, was sent to have lent $1,000 to launch the clinic.
