The Geoff Christian Medal, commonly referred to as the Christian Medal, is an Australian rules football award given to the best player in the Australian Football League (AFL) from one of the two teams based in Western Australia, the Fremantle Football Club and the West Coast Eagles. First awarded during the 1999 season, the award is named after and struck in honour of Geoff Christian (1934–1998), a sports writer and broadcaster who served as chief football writer for ''The West Australian'' between 1961 and 1988, before being posthumously inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and 2004, respectively. Daniel Kerr
Daniel Alan Kerr (born 16 May 1983) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He played 220 games for the club between 2001 and 2013, as a hard-running inside midfielder. Kerr was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. His father Roger also played professional football, while his sister Samantha plays professional soccer. Kerr was recruited to West Coast with the 18th pick in the 2000 National Draft. He finished runner-up in the 2001 AFL Rising Star, and in 2003, aged 20, won the Goal of the Year award. Kerr placed in the top three of the Brownlow Medal in three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2007, notably finishing runner-up to teammate Ben Cousins in 2005 by a single vote. Australian Rules Football In Western Australia
Australian rules football in Western Australia (WA) is the most popular sport in the state and Western Australia has the second highest number of Australian rules football participants of any state. Western Australia was the last Australian colony to adopt Australian rules in 1881, however it managed to overtake Rugby union in Western Australia as the most popular code in 1885, and following the Federation of Australia, courtesy of pioneering junior and schools programs, grew faster than any other state. For much of the 20th Century the West Australian Football League was the third strongest state competition in the country. Andrew Brayshaw
Andrew Brayshaw (born 8 November 1999) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early career After an impressive junior career for his school, Haileybury (Melbourne), Haileybury, TAC Cup side Sandringham Dragons and the Victorian Metropolitan representative side, he was recruited by Fremantle with the second overall selection in the 2017 AFL draft. AFL career He made his AFL debut for Fremantle in the opening round of the 2018 AFL season after a series of impressive pre-season games. His debut season was cut short when, in Round 20, he was struck by West Coast Eagles player Andrew Gaff in an off-the-ball incident. Lachie Neale
Lachlan Oliver Neale (born 24 May 1993) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Fremantle Football Club from 2012 to 2018 before being traded to the Brisbane Lions in 2019 where he won the 2020 Brownlow Medal. Beau Waters (born 30 March 1986) is a former professional Australian rules footballer and vice-captain of the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from the Happy Valley Football Club, South Australia, he played for the West Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) before being recruited to West Coast with the 11th pick overall in the 2003 National Draft. Aaron Sandilands
Aaron Sandilands (born 6 December 1982) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). At 211cm/6'11" tall, and with a peak weight of , he is the second heaviest (behind Mick Nolan) and equal tallest player to ever play in the AFL. Originally from Mount Barker, Western Australia, Sandilands played with the East Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), before being rookie listed by Fremantle in the 2002 Rookie Draft. Christopher Dylan Judd (born 8 September 1983) is a former professional Australian rules footballer and captain of both the West Coast Eagles and Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Benjamin Luke Cousins (born 30 June 1978) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for and in the Australian Football League (AFL). Cousins is listed by journalist Mike Sheahan as one of the fifty greatest players of all time. During his 12-year, 238-game career with West Coast, he won several of the league's highest individual awards, including a Brownlow Medal, Most Valuable Player and a premiership medallion.
