Genesee County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 406,211, making it the fifth-most populous county in Michigan. The county seat and population center is Flint (birthplace of General Motors). Genesee County is considered to be a part of the greater Mid Michigan area. The county was named after Genesee County, New York which in turn comes from the Seneca word Gen-nis'-hee-yo, meaning "Beautiful Valley". Genesee County comprises the Flint, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. A major attraction for visitors is Crossroads Village, a living history village north of Flint. Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools is a Michigan public school district teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. The district covers parts of Flint Township, Flint (minor), Mundy Township and Burton. History School District #8 was formed in 1837. With the donation of a section of Elijah Carman's farm land, which is now the corner of Bristol and Fenton Roads, in 1847 the district was renamed as the Carman School District. A dedication ceremony for the Robert N. Mandeville High School was held December 2, 1949 and was named after one of 16 students of the district's 1936 class who died in combat serving in the Air Force during World War II. Montrose Community School District is a public school district in the northwestern corner of Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan and in the Genesee Intermediate School District. The District serves all of the city of Montrose and most of Montrose Township. Swartz Creek Community School District is a public school district in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan and in the Genesee Intermediate School District.
