Generalstabens Topografiske Afdeling
Generalstabens Topografiske Afdeling () was the cartographic, topographic and general maps department of the Danish army from 1842 to 1928. It supplied both government and civilian organizations with accurate maps of Denmark. History ''Generalkvartermesterstaben'' was a department under the newly erected ''Generalstab'' of 1808, the first combined army command in Denmark. The Generalstab is the origin of Army Operational Command. On 8 April 1842 ''Generalkvartermesterstaben'' and the mapping part of the scientific organisation Det Kongelig Danske Videnskabernes Selskab was merged into ''Generalstabens Topografiske Afdeling''. For a short period, 1856-1864, the department was under the Ministry of Trade, other than that, it was under the Ministry of War for the entire span of its life. Cartography (; from grc, χάρτης , "papyrus, sheet of paper, map"; and , "write") is the study and practice of making and using maps. Combining science, aesthetics and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality (or an imagined reality) can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. Topography is the study of the forms and features of land surfaces. The topography of an area may refer to the land forms and features themselves, or a description or depiction in maps. Topography is a field of geoscience and planetary science and is concerned with local detail in general, including not only relief, but also natural, artificial, and cultural features such as roads, land boundaries, and buildings. Royal Danish Army
The Royal Danish Army ( da, Hæren, fo, Herurin, kl, Sakkutuut) is the land-based branch of the Danish Defence, together with the Danish Home Guard. For the last decade, the Royal Danish Army has undergone a massive transformation of structures, equipment and training methods, abandoning its traditional role of anti-invasion defence, and instead focusing on out of area operations by, among other initiatives, reducing the size of the conscripted and reserve components and increasing the active (standing army) component, changing from 60% support structure and 40% operational capability, to 60% combat operational capability and 40% support structure. When fully implemented, the Danish army will be capable of deploying 1,500 troops permanently on three different continents continuously, or 5,000 troops for a shorter period of time, in international operations without any need for extraordinary measures such as parliamentary approval of a war funding bill. Army Operational Command (Denmark)
Army Operational Command ( da, Hærens Operative Kommando), short "HOK", was the Danish Army's top authority. It is a Level.II command authority, directly under the Defence Command. ''HOK'' was formed on 1 January 1991. The origin of ''HOK'' can be traced back to 1808, with the forming of the General staff. Geodætisk Institut
Geodætisk Institut (1928–1987) was a Danish state-run cartographic institute. It was created by law number 82, of 31 March 1928, combining Generalstabens Topografiske Afdeling and Den danske Gradmaaling, two institutions that did somewhat overlapping cartographic and topographic mapping of Denmark. It was initially part of Ministry of War (Krigsministeret), later Ministry of Defence (Forsvarsministeret). In the years 1940–1953 ''Geodætisk Institut'' made the second nationwide precision landscape levelling of Denmark. The first was done 1885–1905 by ''Den danske Gradmaaling''. The height fix point remains Århus Domkirke ( Dansk Normal Nul (DNN)), as established in 1905. A third levelling was done 1982–1994. This formed the basic for the new height system DVR90, replacing DNN. The height fix point remains Aarhus Domkirke, however its kote was changed from 5.6150m to 5.570m in DVR90. Topographic Map
In modern mapping, a topographic map or topographic sheet is a type of map characterized by large- scale detail and quantitative representation of relief features, usually using contour lines (connecting points of equal elevation), but historically using a variety of methods. Traditional definitions require a topographic map to show both natural and artificial features. A topographic survey is typically based upon a systematic observation and published as a map series, made up of two or more map sheets that combine to form the whole map.
