Genera Palmarum
''Genera Palmarum'' is a botany reference book that gives a detailed overview of the systematic biology of the palm family (Arecaceae). The first edition of ''Genera Palmarum'' was published in 1987. The second edition was published in 2008, with a reprint published in 2014. ''Genera Palmarum'' is currently the most detailed monograph on palm taxonomy and systematics. History Beginnings When Liberty Hyde Bailey, an American horticulturist and botanist who founded the L. H. Bailey Hortorium at Cornell University, began studying palms in the early 1900s, about 700 species had been identified. The number reached 1,000 by 1946, the rise due in large part to his intensive study of the family. Ill health finally forced Bailey to discontinue collecting abroad in 1949, at the age of 91. He continued to study, compare, and write about his palm specimens. His ultimate goal was to produce an authoritative guide to all palms, titled ''Genera Palmarum''. Harold E. Moore, Jr. (1917–1980), a ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Botany
Botany, also called , plant biology or phytology, is the science of plant life and a branch of biology. A botanist, plant scientist or phytologist is a scientist who specialises in this field. The term "botany" comes from the Ancient Greek word (''botanē'') meaning " pasture", " herbs" "grass", or " fodder"; is in turn derived from (), "to feed" or "to graze". Traditionally, botany has also included the study of fungi and algae by mycologists and phycologists respectively, with the study of these three groups of organisms remaining within the sphere of interest of the International Botanical Congress. Nowadays, botanists (in the strict sense) study approximately 410,000 species of land plants of which some 391,000 species are vascular plants (including approximately 369,000 species of flowering plants), and approximately 20,000 are bryophytes. Botany originated in prehistory as herbalism with the efforts of early humans to identify – and later cultivate – ed ... Manjekia
''Manjekia'' is a monotypic genus of palm for a species of palm native to Biak island, Indonesia, off the northwest coast of New Guinea. The genus was proposed in 2014. Its sole species is ''Manjekia maturbongsii'', which was first described in 2012 as ''Adonidia maturbongsii''. The specific epithet honours Rudi Maturbongs for his contributions to the study of palms in Biak. In 2014, the original authors decided that it was sufficiently distinct to be transferred from ''Adonidia'' to its own genus, ''Manjekia''. The transfer has been accepted by sources such as Plants of the World Online Plants of the World Online (POWO) is an online database published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It was launched in March 2017 with the ultimate aim being "to enable users to access information on all the world's known seed-bearing plants by .... Solfia
''Balaka insularis'' is a rare species of flowering plant in the palm family endemic to Samoa. It was formerly placed in the monotypic genus ''Solfia'' with the species name ''Solfia samoensis''. It was placed in the genus '' Balaka'' in 2014.Zona S, Baker WJ. 2014Solfia transferred to Balaka ''Palms'' 58: 191–192. Description The trunk is solitary and ringed, colored brown, no more than 8 cm wide. The sheath of the pinnate leaf is extended, wrapping around the trunk to form a tall, slender crownshaft. The petiole is short, the thin rachis bears regularly spaced, reduplicate leaflets with a prominent midrib and jagged ends. The inflorescence emerges below the crownshaft, initially enclosed by a prophyll, with a single peduncular bract. Monoecious, there are staminate and pistillate flowers present in each plant, borne on the rachillae as triads of two males surrounding one female. Fleshy and red when ripe, the fruit becomes wrinkled when dry, carrying one seed with hom ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pritchardiopsis
''Saribus jeanneneyi'' is a very rare species of palm tree in the genus ''Saribus''. It is endemic to southern New Caledonia, where only one mature specimen, surrounded by a few seedlings, survived in its native habitat as of 1997. The cause of its rarity in the wild is because its meristem is edible. Taxonomy In 1910 ''Saribus jeanneneyi'' was first described as a new species by the Italian palm specialist Odoardo Beccari. He placed it in the genus '' Pritchardiopsis'', but phylogenetic studies based on DNA led to its transfer into ''Saribus'' in 2011. The specific epithet commemorates Ambroise Jeanneney, an agronomist in New Caledonia, who collected the holotype specimen in Prony District. The holotype is housed at the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Description The fruit are some 4cm in diameter. Compared to other species of ''Saribus'', ''S. jeanneneyi'' has relatively large fruit, although it shares this characteristic with ''S. surru'' and ''S. tothur''. I ... Retispatha
''Retispatha'' is a rare, monotypic genus of flowering plant in the palm family endemic to Borneo, where the sole species, ''Retispatha dumetosa'', is known as (dialectal: ) or 'the bear's sugar cane'. The name combines Latin and Greek words meaning 'network' and 'spathe', and the species epithet means 'bushy'.Riffle, Robert L. and Craft, Paul (2003) ''An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms''. Portland: Timber Press. / While classified with other rattans, they retain only superficial climbing organs; they sprawl and lean but are not true climbers. Taxonomy Despite bearing strong resemblance to members of the Plectocomiinae, in preparing illustrations for the palm survey ''Genera Palmarum'', Marion Sheehan discovered a single sterile, staminate flower among the pistillate members. The absence of such a flower previously obscured its relationship with the Calaminae, which it also closely resembles. This find, despite its rarity, seems to confirm its placement in the Calaminae s ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
