Franz Xaver Gebel
Franz Xaver Gebel (1787 – 3 May 1843) was a German composer, music teacher, and conductor. Gebel was born in Fürstenau, near Breslau, Silesia. He studied under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Abbé Vogler, and became Kapellmeister at Leopoldstadt in Vienna in 1810, then worked at a succession of theatres in Pest and Lemberg. He moved to Moscow in 1817, where he would remain until his death in 1843. He taught piano, and became a significant figure in Moscow's musical life, teaching notable figures such as Nikolai Rubinstein and Alexander Villoing, and organizing string quartet performances from 1829 to 1835. Georg Gebel (the Younger)
Georg Gebel (25 October 1709 – 24 September 1753) was a German musician and composer. Gebel was born in Brieg, Silesia (present-day Brzeg, Poland) to Georg Gebel the Elder, also a musician and composer. He studied music under his father, and in 1729 became second organist at the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Breslau (present-day Wrocław), as well as '' Kapellmeister'' to the Duke of Oels. He joined Heinrich von Brühl's orchestra in Dresden in 1735, where he met Pantaleon Hebenstreit, the inventor of the pantalon, and learned to play that instrument. In 1747 he was appointed ''Kapellmeister'' to John Frederick, Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. He died in Rudolstadt in 1753. Gebel was a prolific composer. While in Breslau, he wrote a variety of instrumental and vocal music, and while in Rudolstadt, wrote 12 operas, two Passions, two Christmas cantatas, sets of cantatas for several years, more than 100 orchestral symphonies, partitas, concertos, and so on. Georg Gebel (the Elder)
Georg Gebel (1685–1750) was a German composer, organist, and innovator in the construction of keyboard instruments. Gebel was born in Breslau, and became a tailor's apprentice, but ran away from the apprenticeship to study music. He studied under Winkler and Krause, and became organist at Brieg in 1709 and at Breslau in 1713. He died in Breslau in 1750. He invented a clavichord with quarter tones and a clavicymbalum with a pedal keyboard. His numerous compositions were not published, but included an oratorio, cantata A cantata (; ; literally "sung", past participle feminine singular of the Italian verb ''cantare'', "to sing") is a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movements, often involving a choir. Gunther Gebel-Williams
Gunther Gebel-Williams (September 12, 1934 – July 19, 2001) was an animal trainer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1968 to 1990. Early life Gebel was born in Schweidnitz, Lower Silesia (now Świdnica, Poland). As a child, he and his mother relocated to Germany, in all probability as part of the expulsion of ethnic Germans, when Silesia was ceded to Poland after World War II. His father was missing in the Soviet Union. Career Gebel and his mother started working for Circus Williams in Germany in 1947. When its owner suddenly died, the owner's widow asked the 18-year-old Gebel to become the animal trainer which began his career. He then took on the additional surname Williams. Gebel-Williams came to prominence during the early days of television when the circus was still a popular form of entertainment.
